Agreed. Why does it go below 11.6 on ramp up then head towards 12.9 through the rpm band??

Yea wierd...should be leaner at lower rpms, and as boost is climbing it should prorportionially richen up.

Something is definately off. The AFR's a way to lean at the end of your pull. I'm not sure what you paid to get tuned, but you only managed to pick up 10 whp from the stage two map? Not worth the tune IMO.

I have to agree with ninja boy as far as the AFRs, 10 whp is a bit on the low side, but the protune is meant mainly to smooth things out as far as AFRs and boost, which will net you some additional power, I gained only about 12 whp and 35 ft/lbs torque because I wanted a solid, safe reliable tune at 18psi.

Yup, I just wanted to smooth things out a bit. I don't know much about AFR so I trusted the tuner to do his thing.

Sould I go back to off the shelf stage 2?

Well, If i were you I would take your car back down to the tuner and say that the tune did not turn out how you wanted it to, and your car is running to lean. Get your money back, find a different tuner or if you trust him to retune you then go ahead and do that.

woa woa woa......ok...first thing...I tuned the car.

that being said...heres the scoop.

the second dyno graph somehow has smoothing turned down....(i did not print the graph) and that is why it seems less smooth, secondly....the AFR's are NOT too lean on your car.....i wouldnt leave you that way.........i assure you the changes i made were not dangerous. There was ZERO knock and timing was steady... LOGS were made of the runs...the sampling was done at the tailpipe(2-3pts leaner) and the car was responding perfectly to the changes.

I have been tuning cars for over 12 years. My experience with Stoichometry is extensive and i have recieved formal training on many levels including aircraft, boats, motorcycles, and yes automobiles(diesel included)..... I always stand behind my tuning and will not allow you to remain disappointed... please give me a call at the shop anytime and allow me to clarify things for you and set things in their proper place....

Jack,

Unfortunately, you are posting on a board that has many tuners who are as experienced as you. Moreover, there are people here who have a lot more experience tuning Subaru motors. We are one of those enthusiast groups who seriously get into actual tuning theory, experimenation, and implementation. I notice that this is your first post here. No biggie. However, it leads me to believe that you haven't poked around a lot in order to gather other people's experience tuning Subarus. If the car was running mid-12's at higher RPMs then that, to me, is too lean. Now, if we are talking about a quick run down the track - fine. Cool deal. No problem. However, this is for a daily driver that will see all sorts of environmental conditions as well as possible extended high-RPM pulls. I'd hate to see the EGTs on this car under long pulls ... especially road racing. If it wasn't detonating on that one dyno pull, I'd wager it would start detonating on a road-race course. I don't have a beef with you starting off rich and then leaning it out. That is your tuning style and I understand the reasoning for this. Some choose to start off lean and then go rich. Fine. That is their tuning style and I understand their reasoning for that. What I do have a slight problem with is *if* (notice my use of the word 'if') the car was running in the mid-12's AFR toward redline.

I agree....there are a few details that may have not been presented with these dyno sheets i must disclose. I apologize for taking the defensive on this matter at all.... but sometimes the onslaught of insult creates a fake sense of hysteria....lol.....

I found out as i was finishing this tune that the O2 sensor i was using was indeed going bad(usually lose one every 15-30hrs) and i had already set the AFR's on 2-3 previous runs while the sensor was still producing favorable results....and since fueling wasnt going to be changed any further....i proceeded to make a follow-up run to ensure there were no signs of an unsafe condition showing up in my Datalogs....which there were not....I have also been in contact with the owner and have invited him to bring the car back for a second session to allow him to run the car again on our dyno with a fresh sensor to produce an "acceptable" dyno sheet....as the current one is obviously sub-standard. I appologize for the confusion in this matter and thank you all for your attention to detail.

I'd DEF like to see the EGT's on this car. That will confirm if there is indeed a lean condition or a sensor. In my experience on the dyno, a bad sensor will go to near stoich when it fails or starts going bad and it does so in a manner you will notice. Im talking about, it going from 10.8:1 to 14.7:1. IMO, I seriously doubt it was a sensor, unless there is more data to back it up.

Unfortunately i have no EGT data for the car....but i will say that the O2 sensor was reading well out of range and calibration alone couldnt make it agree...a mistake on my part letting the car leave with a sheet showing Bad O2 data....and again i cannot reinforce the fact that the owner is bringing the car back for a clean sheet and assurance there is no error in O2 data.....thank you all again for helping in this matter and we will be back with our findings.
