Thumbs up ProTune at Gruppe-S on 6/10/2006

First of all I just purchased a Cobb AP and I used the 91 octane stage 2 of the shelf map. I'm currently running a Modded HKS downpipe to bellmouth,Injen CAI and a HKS HiPower exhaust.I brought my car to Gruppe-S on Saturday to get ProTuned because of the whole leaning out issue with the cold air intake. Mike at Gruppe-S did 3 base runs and he walked up to me and told me that my cold air intake was leaning out the car just a little bit and he just suggested to put the stock airbox back to solve the issue. With the three base runs my car hit 273.9 awhp @ 6000rm and 274.7 torque @ 4000rpm consistently. He said by putting the stock airbox the torque would be bumped up to around 285 torque!! At the end he didnt want to charge me to ProTune it cuz he thought it was a waste of money and that putting the airbox back would just be the quick fix and I'll be all good. So my whole experience at Gruppe-S was kick ass because of Mikes honesty. I totally recommend them to everyone. Not alot of shops would be as honest as he was. Again thanks alot Mike I appreciate the honesty. -Ed Flores

That's basically what Mike told me when I brought my Legacy in the other week (except that I get to keep my intake - K&N Typhoon). To make it more challenging, I'm going to put in a TD06H-18G, AVO fuel pump, and Nismo 740cc injectors in a couple weeks so that he has to ProTune it.

I will never understand why a tuner wont tune for what you have? Why did you have to put the stock airbox back on? A simple tune could have adjusted for the CAI... Oh well guess everyone is different.....

Well its not that he couldnt tune it, he was just saying that it would cost the $195 to ProTune it and why waste the money when you could just put the stock airbox back to get the same results or actually a little better. My torque on the base run was around 274@4000rpm. He said that I lost a little torque because of the intake due to the readings from the MAF and it was running lean, so If I was to put the stock airbox back the torque would jump to around 285@4000rpm and the leaning would stop. He said that I should get it ProTuned if I were to go bigger turbo or if I go front mount intercooler and that it would be worth the wait to spend the money at that time. I think he was just being honest and you dont really get alot of honest guys out there. Most shops try to make money off of you no matter what. I really appreciate his honesty and I will go back for all my needs.

Mike doesn't say he won't ProTune the car, but rather that the cost/benefit of doing so may not yield a rate of return that's worthwhile (but everyone is different). If you tell him to ProTune after his suggestion(s), he'll take your money and get to work.

However, If zeroGsti sells his intake for >$75 he'll have the net gain of more torque, the cost of the baseline runs covered, and possibly more money in his pocket. Sounds like a good deal to me.

EXACTLY!! But I am going to keep the intake because it can be a short ram intake also. I'm most likely to go front mount intercooler and bigger turbo. At that time I'm sure i'll get it Protuned by Mike.

Mike @ gruppe-s didn't want to tune it because the healty number the OP's car is putting down. For people who have no idea about dyno readings, the Gruppe-S' mustang dyno is one of the lowest reading dyno in the country. 274whp on gruppe-s' dyno can easily be over 300+whp on a dyno jet in the same area. A protune might not add must of difference.
