this is lethal on this car, and would likely grenade my motor in gear 4,5,6.

Q- have you had the a/f checked on your car since the mapping? reason i ask is that although i ALSO believe pdx is great, you need to make sure the map works for your car in a relatively safe margin, with a/f's being acceptible. a dyno run locally (with a/f of course) will verify the metering and output nicely.

my car will be done (last time) soon, and i cannot wait. i have decided to make several changes to the setup (none of which are tuning).

ese

ps- i did make numbers with the sr55, but not acceptible for me whatsoever (also, boost creep was still an issue, even after DI came and ported the turbo himself). im thankful that Scotty seigel is tuning for me, as it takes a great deal of road tuning to correctly set this thing up (no dyno can simulate the boost levels correctly, and accound for upper end creep issues).

lets meet up later, for sure.

ok man, you got my number. give me a call. i also want you give some info on getting this tmic to sit correctly

Thumbs up Scott Siegel - Subaru of Gwinnett -Georgia

Many thanks to Scott Siegel for taking care of my STi. Scott is a SCCA instructor also and I recently took his driving school. What a great experience to get some mods and then take them to the track! Check out www.siegelracing.com

Just got another customer's '05 STi off the dyno. ONLY mods, TBE, fuel pump, Perrin EBCS, Ecutek. 330.5 wlb-ft. I played for a WHILE trying to get the whp up, but without adding a spring to the wastegate I just couldn't get the boost at the top. Tried everything from 11.0 afr to 11.55 afr and timing from 26.5 to 32, wouldn't make over 304whp.

Check out the plot: (sorry about the phone pic, I'll get the real screenshot on Monday)

http://www.siegelracing.com/kellydyno.jpg

the dyno does funny things with boost control. On the road (after the dyno) the boost and engine load graphs, as well as perceived power, were PERFECTLY smooth.

Default $1690 in tuning, slower than stock. what would you do.

well, this post is about to be long so here goes:

all track times are on our local 1/8 mile track as that is what i have closest access to.

prior setups:
utec, tbe, intake, fuel pump, gtspec header, tuning by godspeed
288whp, 320 wtq
best time 8.3@83 mph

cobb ap stg2 93 minus the intake and with the intake
best time 8.4 @ 82.5 mph

my 60' are always 1.74-1.76 for the most part.

so on to my current dilemma:
power mods i have now:
deadbolt sz49
ultimate racing uppipe w/tial 38 ext gate
pe850's
walbro pump
aps dr725
aps cai
hks dp (wrapped)
fujitsubo header (wrapped)
perrin ebcs
ecutek reflash and tuning totalling $1690 done by scott siegal of subaru of gwinette.

based on a thread regarding 'ecutek mastery' i gave scott a call to discuss my setup and tuning options.
scott was very knowledgeable and helpful throughout, and always answered his phone with any questions i had.
i had a copy of streettuner and my ap that i was interested in using.
scott thought it would be best to go with ecutek as he felt it offerd more control, and a better value since he offeredit with 2 hours free tuning.

set up my appt for a monday.
showed up bright and early monday morning and waited for scott to tune.

i will spare all the boring details unless they become absolutely necessary.
we hit some snags.
one of which is my responsibility as i installed all parts myself.
my tial 38 leaked @ the flanges because i used the supplied gasket that came with it. even though this is supposedly a 'known' issue, there was no mention of this from U.R.
fine, i fixed it myself in sog's garage.

another snag was injector scaling as it pertains to long and short term fuel trim.
scott played quite extensively with various scaling measures trying to get it just right. this took quite some time and in the end he ended up using values in line with what he did first.
*time wasted*
basically the better part of monday and all day tuesday were spent tuning my car for the most part.

***boy cobb's real time tuning feature would have sure been handy instead of wasting countless time dropping map changes***

best we saw on scott's dynapak was 385 or so whp and 390+ wtq.
not bad, but scott thought it had 400 in it based on his results with 20g's.
20g results on his dyno? no, as he has none.

scott was curious if it was my choice of header that was holding back ponies. so, i swapped the header myself and we gave it a shot.
same tune, ecu actually advanced the timing more, and it still made approx 15 less whp and 20 less wtq.
hmmm, so much for the 'headers make no power'.

skip ahead to the end of wednesday...
(i was supposed to be leaving monday night, or at the latest tuesday morning)
i'm ready to leave with what i think is a 385/395 car.
scott asks if i want to dyno @ topspeed just to compare it to doug's results with various 20g setups.
yes, we had no results to compare it with on sog's dynapak.

i agree, since doug offered this free of charge since he was curious.
get to topspeed, strap on the car...
laggy ass car puts down 357 whp @ topspeed.
WTF? i ask myself. where's the 380+?
subsequent tuning commences as doug offered some help.
couple hours go by, we get a best of 385 whp and 400 wtq and the curve has come back to the left.
great i say, that's fine. even though doug's own 20g car makes that or more on a smaller turbo with a clipped wheel.
either way i'm fine with it.
fast forward a couple days...
get her home and first challenge comes up:
sr20 240sx with gt2871. 350 whp or so.
i get whored.
not too happy.

take it to the track: 1/8 mile remember...
various times in the high 8's with trap speeds around 80 mph.

i'm pissed.
scott says check for leaks.
i basically go out and tbolt clamp the whole fmic setup even though there were no signs of leaks.
recheck my header, uppipe install with flashlight, looking for any signs of black smoke... anything.
remove dp, wrap it.
remove header, wrapped it too.
maybe heatsoak is having an affect?
reinstall those parts, no leaks, great. i think.

playin around on the highway with my friends evo with cams, exhaust, ebc, reflash... and i'm a lil perturbed that i can't just walk him.

whatever...
back to the track.
all 5 runs are ugly.
high 8's and even a 9!
all @ trap speeds @ or below 80mph!
i should be able to pull a 2.5 60' and still have the 380+ whp carry me thru the traps @ 90+ mph even if the time sucks.

now i'm boiling hot.
i paid $1690 in tuning costs alone to have a car that is slower than stock, slower than an srt4, slower than an sc'd pontiac gtp (on slicks tho), only to be told i should buy an avc-r since it has to be a boost issue.

why wasn't it a boost issue on the dyno?
why was i told the ebcs in conjunction with the ecutek is a good option?
i was only told the avc-r was preferred since it would allow for higher boost in gears 1-4 and be able to be dialed back in 5th and 6th.

what do you guys think is an appropriate course of action at this point?
i asked scott if i was s.o.l. in regards to the $1690 i spent on tuning?
basically, he said i got $1690 worth of tuning.

in hours?, yes i probably got that and more.
in results? i got screwed. i'm slower than stock. period!

i was going to keep this to myself until the situation was resolved, but at this point i have nothing to gain from keeping quiet.
my next action is to go to topspeed, have doug do his best, install a meth kit while i am there (don't wanna waste a 7hr road trip )
and hopefully return with a 420+ whp car that can run a wee bit faster than stock.
after seeing the countless dyno runs the gang at topspeed has logged testing an dtuning various setups, i have no doubt i will return smiling

as an analogy:
if a shop quoted you a custom paint job for a set price, and then when you showed up you were left with a primered car that took twice as long to paint, would you be happy paying full price?

i respect the time that went into my car, but i made it clear that i wanted a ballpark estimate on what it would take to tune my setup.
i was told $850 plus 2 to 3 hours of additional tuning.
lets say my leaking flange cost an extra hour. i'm @ 4 hours at most.
4 hours with the results expected.
not $1690 and a slower than stock car.
i was told that s.o.g. had tuned and dyno'd plenty of larger turbo sti's.
there was one plot from essmes' sr55 which wasn't very good due to sr55 issues, and there was one plot from a greddy t67 kit.
no 20g's like i was told, no ther large turbo sti's.

i sure hope for essmes' hard work and patience, he gets a 400 whp car as i think he deserves it.
i also hope that all the learning done on my setup results in a lower bill than i had.

i don't think that scott is a bad tuner, or that he has no clue what he is doing.
unfortunately there is something wrong with my setup, and the money i sunk into it is not justified.
i was lied to about the so called results subaru of gwinette had achieved as they had no proof of it.
i was lied to that i was first leaving with a 380+ whp car on scott's dynapak. as is evident by the fact that it only put down 357 whp on topspeed's dynojet.
then to make matters worse...
the 385 whp pull on the dynojet was with scott running a bit over 20psi.
i later find out that the map was detuned for less boost.
yet no final pull was done to show what i was actually paying for.
i was under the assumption i had a 385 whp tune.
what do you think?

I can only speak for my dealings with Scott. I have watched him dyno a handful of STi's and acheive amazing results. As for your car, I cant really say much as I was not there during the process. There are a handful of members within WRXatlanta who run reasonably high hp STi's and who have been tuned by Scott using ECUtek. From my experience with them, they're always pleased or surprised with their results (better than expected). I have never heard about about SoG spoofing results. In fact, Scott has tuned over 70 cars using ECutek as per my discussion with him yesterday. Every result which I have seen has come directly off a customer's car.

I wish you the best of luck tuning your car with TopSpeed, they're great guys.

as i mentioned i don't have a problem with scott as a person, and do not doubt the results he has achieved on some cars.
what bothers me is that:
a. i was led to believe my car was making 38x whp not once but twice.
b. i was 'given $1690 worth of tuning'. the results would say otherwise.
c. i was told they (s.o.g.) had tuned 20g setups with 365+ whp. no dyno results there though.
d. and to top it all off, when i was not totally jumping for joy at the 380 whp, i got to listen to some of the guys tell me how i should be happy with what i got, and that 380 whp is 'alot from a lil ol 4 cylinder'.
guess what? you want me to be happy? you pay the effin bill!

i should have just pulled my back out taking my car off the dynapak myself. then the tuning might have been free
j/k

i will be sure to get a before dyno pull at my expense before any changes are made.
then i will post the results of what my car is putting down.
