this is WAAAY easy to do...
1. on the bottom of the radiator, toward the driver side, little valve you twist with finger and let old coolant drain. (MAKE SURE ENGINE IS COLD).
2. Close drain fill with distilled water (through radiator cap).
3. run engine for 30 seconds.
4. repeat step 1.
5. close valve.
6. fill 50/50 coolant and distilled water.
7. LET ENGINE RUN WITH CAP OFF, this is safe becuase pressure wont build up...
8. stand in the engine bay and add coolant into the radiator (you will see the level go down as the air bubbles in the system are filled with liquid).
9. let it run for 5 mins watching and make sure your coolant resivour(SP?) is full.
10. recap radiator, and test drive. check after engine cools.

just finished the flush and came out good from what i can see.... im gonna keep an eye on the coolant level to make sure because i didnt get all 2 gallons in. i removed the lower radiator hose and thermostat let it all drain out then ran a hose through the radiator and upper coolant housing by the turbo until only clear fluid came out. put it all back together filled the radiator, overflow tank, and upper housing with 50/50 mix subaru coolant and distilled water from cvs. also added the coolant conditioner additive from subaru. turned the car on let it run with heat full blast on defrost until fans came on then shut down and i have to double check levels once cool. didnt over heat once temp gauge stayed right around the middle little below....

Has anyone ever had intermittent over heating after a DIY coolant flush?

I did a flush at the end of summer but only refilled the radiator & plastic reservoir , forgetting about the Metal turbo reservoir. The car was fine for for a day or so, then it overfilled the plastic (over flow / reservoir) by a lot, then it over heated.

after that i took it to a meinkie for a coolant flush. it hasn't spit any coolant out, although the fills the plastic tank to the top. Before the engine temp gauge would always read nearly at the bottom of the normal range. Now it will often rise up to the top of the normal, Usually while on uphills, but sometimes while on a flat. It ran too cold one morning . Also while coasting down a long long hill in nuetral it ran normal, then ran near the top of the normal range , then went back down to normal.

could i have messed up the thermostat somehow? I've tried taking the car into the subaru dealership as i'm under warenty still, but they haven't been able to duplicate the problem. the car does not run too hot Every day. but almost every day, but i also can't duplicate the issue upon demand. sometimes i can drive up a long hill @ 2500 or 5000 with no running hot, other times it runs hot no matter what.

I'm thinking i'm going to replace my thermostat myself just try something (plus an other coolant flush) :| Chitty

Ive seen other people say this but never understood what you are exactly doing. Could someone explain it better?

And according to that document subaru coolant is already a 50/50 mix, so do you put that straight in or use a 50/50 of that mix with water (which would mean the coolant percentage is now 25%) ?

coolant i bought from subaru wasnt premixed. i bought diluted water to mis it. i removed my lower radiator hose and thermostat then used a garden hose and ran water til through radiator til it was clear and through the tank by the turbo until it was clear running out the bottom.
