Default How to remove left top vent on dash?

I was wondering if anyone knows if the little ovalish shaped vent to the "northeast" of the main instrument cluster can be removed. I have a pretty loud rattle coming from there.

Thanks

BTW not the actual vent you can twist and control, but the defrost one.

It would actually be Northwest....but why not just say top left of the dash? Anyway I believe you just pull on it...or you can try popping it out with a small flat head screwdriver.

stick in a small flathead screwdriver at the 9 or 3 position to unset the clip and pop it out.

see dash writeup in sig for a pic of what the ring looks like.

If your talking about the vent that is on the top of the dash by the A pillar, It doesn't just pop out. I have a rattle in the same area and tried to get the vent out. Used a screw driver, tried pulling etc. Did everything but break it trying to get it out. I've decided to buy a new one and break the old one out. May seem drastic but the rattle/squeak is driving me crazy. If you figure out how to get it out, please post your results.

Any consensus on how to get this out? I'm having the exact same rattle.

I have the same rattle but I don't beleive it is coming from the vent (in my car). I think what is happening is the Sweak in my case is coming from the dash board material rubbing on the Drivers side A piller.

If I push right on the vent the sweak goes away because I'm tighening up the gap.

I was thinking about getting a small piece of material and trying to wedge it in their like i'm flossing my teeth!

However, it is cold out right now so it may tighten up in the summer when it heats up...??

Anyways just a thought...

I've been trying for weeks to find the rattle. It may be coming from that vent, but it seems unlikely. I totally removed the windshield defroster vent (with VIN plate) and A-pillar covers and could still hear it, so I'm running out of ideas.

Anyway, both vents do pop right out. They won't do it easily, though- I broke a tab off of the lower left vent in the process. Anyway, I remembered this thread and snapped a picture for you.

Default Dashboard Rattle

Group:

On my '02 WRX I had a rattle coming from the left side of the dash. In my case it turned out to be the VIN plate rattling. If I put my hand on the plate, the rattling would stop immediately. I could also feel a slight wiggle in the plate itself.

So far on the '05 STi I haven't had the same problem.

Just one thing to check out before tearing apart your dash.

Hope this helps!

My was rattling like crazy. I wanted to remove it and put some grease around the outside. But I did not want the smell of the grease in the car when the heater is on. So for now I just used Vaseline. The rattle is gone for now; even in the -20 days. However Vaseline will not last forever. Does anyone know of a grease that will last and is odorless?

I have that rattle in the same location as well. At this point I'm just going to wait until it's warmer and open the windows and have the exhaust and engine drown out the rattle.

I almost can't believe it, but my rattle WAS that oval vent. Being a duct, I fixed it with duct tape. I think the oval vent wasn't fitting tightly into the actual ducting, so I increased its diameter a little with two strips of duct tape. It worked!

Last night, for the first time, I had a completely rattle-less drive. No ****ting around.
