PatSTi.... on regular WRXs the up pipe contains a cat. On the STi the up-pipe has no cat, it's just a 100% open tube. When you hear people talk about gutting the cat they are talking about the up-pipe in a WRX not an STi

Default It depends on whether you a WRX or STi...

I installed the same exact header about 2yrs ago...

I have an 04 Sti, and my up-pipe came out without a problem because it did not have the extra girth of the Wrx up-pipe with the Cat...This little area will take an additional 15min probably...

My friend and I changed ours out in about 3 hours taking our time...(we swapped header for header) so we did two cars at once, sharing tools...

Tricky part was 1) we had only jack stands...it would be nice to have had a lift...2) The genII header has a three bolt flange (header to up-pipe) joint...one of those nuts is hard to reach and tighten...that was the only pain part really...

I did make a mistake though, I tried to re-use the gaskets and boy what a mess...I had to re-order and reinstall all gaskets...they leaked really bad...

Good luck...and order new gaskets!

Got all my gaskets. The Helix DP to Bosal Cat-back was tricky. I ended up getting one from Advance Auto (Felpro) that I will need to trim some from the I.D. but it should work.

I'm replacing an APS uppipe and header with a Gruppe-s header and Helix uppipe will it be necessary for me to remove the downpipe? I'm running an FP green if it matters

Why is it necessary to jack up the motor?

You need to remove the downpipe to get to 2 of the uppipe nuts that are located in back of the turbo under the downpipe. Furthermore, you never want to jack up the motor unless you disconnect the downpipe. I recommend jacking the motor because it makes the uppipe removal/install 100% painless. Furthermore, jacking up the motor takes about 3 minutes ... compared to the cursing and time spent on trying to twist out the uppipe and not being able to do it.

So jacking up the motor is to help make room to get the uppipe out? Sorry for the stupid question just trying to understand it a little better.

Thanks for the help.

Absolutely. I've done multiple uppipe installs. The very first one we tried to just twist and turn the uppipe to get it out (there are people who do this successfully). I just said, screw this and then removed the 2 nuts (one on each side) for the motor mounts and jacked the motor up a couple inches. Uppipe slides right out (after, of course, you have removed the passenger side exhaust manifold).

Just to let you know - all the uppipe installs have been on WRXs (catted uppipe). So, maybe you don't need to jack the motor to get the uppipe out of an STI. Try getting it out without jacking the motor first - you might not need to now that I think about it.

If you happen to be doing the Downpipe at the same time then the up-pipe comes out that way, no jacking required.

Default Re: Header and up pipe install

Bumping an old one for some updated information. I used this thread as a guide to installing my headers today. I confirmed that you do not have to remove the turbo and you do not have to jack up the engine on an STI to get the up pipe out. It did take some playing, but I could not simply pull the up pipe down and out of the engine. I had to turn the up pipe and angle it so I could get it out the hole where the down pipe comes out.

I fought with it for a good hour before I figured out this was the best way to do it. Just for the record I was going to jack up the engine after fighting with it only to realize that my swap bars were in the way of the 14mm bold to the engine mount on both the drivers and passengers side. This means I would have had to drop the sub frame, pull the front sway bar out and then get to the engine mount bolt. I said Eff that and just kept at it. So for anyones future reference that comes across this thread knows that it can be done.

Cheers!
