Default How do you install Tial 38mm Wastegate?

I'm wanting to replace my wastegate with the Tial 38mm WG. I dont want to port the stock one. can anyone offer any info, pics, step by step instructions for this? also... when/if I upgrade, what flange do I want? I'm all stock except AEM CAI. thanks in advance for any help with this!

scott

This is a pretty intense change for a stock turbo vehicle... I think you will have to weld a pipe from the up-pipe and connect the wg to that. if you want to dump that back into the exhaust you will have to fab a tube from the wg outlet and back to the dp... Then as far as actuation, i have no idea...

There are a lot of other mods I would do first before an EWG. Usually most people don't go to an EWG until they have gone to a MUCH larger turbo than stock.

You're going to have to weld the IWG on your turbo shut. For resale of the turbo/car you may want to just port it instead and it's about the same amount of work.

But to go to an EWG the easiest route would be to get an uppipe that has a connection for an EWG already welded in. Element, Ultimate Racing, Gruppe-S/Helix, etc sell them. Then buy a Tial wastegate, and the dump tube. You'll need to weld the IWG in your turbo shut. If you want it to dump into the downpipe then you'll need someone to fab the dump tube into the downpipe. Or check out the new Helix uppipe and downpipe.

Again this is something that I wouldn't recommend doing until you have upgraded to a much larger turbo. If you only have a CAI right now you have a lot of work to do before you'll need an EWG. At this point your money will be much better spent on engine management and a nice turboback exhaust. (Although I will recommend if you plan on one day going to a big turbo and an EWG setup to keep away from the TurboXS exhaust. While I like it a lot it's so large that none of the EWG uppipes out there will work with it.)

With just a CAI you shouldn't be experiencing boost creep period. Care to describe what you are experiencing?

Boost creep normally happens when a freer flowing exhaust is installed. Since you still have the stock exhaust you should not be experiencing boost creep.

I don't know much about the AEM CAI but I do know most people on here have stuck with the APS or K&N Typhoon intakes (myself included) since they do not mess with the MAF and AFR ratios. I'm thinking maybe the AEM intake has you running too lean and that is giving you problems. So can you share some more about what the car is doing so we can help you try and diagnose this?

not a problem... under acceleration (hard) around 3000-4000 rpm the car jerks and i get a CEL with flashing cruise. it happens it 4-6 gears. i had autozone pull the codes and there were 4. 3 involving the MAF sensor and 1 P0224 or whatever... for the wastegate. so i dont know what is going on.

i would DEFINATELY appreciate any and all advice and insight into this issue!!

thanks,
scott

to get rid of boost creep, you can just port the wastegate and get a protune and you will be better off. You will probably be looking at ~$1000 for adding an ewg when you have to secure the iwg of the stock turbo anyways.

You may want to do some more research on those maf sensor codes

Sounds like the AEM intake is your problem. Try removing it and going back to the stock intake. I bet it solves the problem you are having. Sounds like the intake is causing issues with the MAF properly reading the amount of air that is going into your car.

Do you have a boost gauge on your car? Any idea what the boost is when this happens?

yes i have the stock boost guage.... but it's happening at different boost points... sometimes at like 14 and sometimes it wraps out the guage in excess of, what, 21-23 psi? the latter happening in 6th gear. hmmm... i'll try that but that means that i have to buy a stock intake... i bought the car used so, no go on the stocker...

The stock gauge is in Mpa so it will be like .1. Stock you should be making .1 which is ~ 14.7psi or so. If you are having boost creep you see it go to .1 and then keep going up and up until you hit fuel cut. It still sounds to me like the intake is making your car act up.

You can probably find the stock intake for cheap on here or NASIOC. I'm getting my car dyno'd Saturday. If my AFRs are fine (which I expect them to be with the APS CAI) I'll be happy to ship you my stock intake as long as you pay for shipping. You'll want a new air filter but other than that it's good.

that sounds fine with me! i'll pay shipping plus enough for lunch at McD's! i'll make sure to include the extra 40 cents so that you can go large! LOL

hell.... you know alot more about this then i do. this is my first turbo car.

thanks,
scott

PS..... in 6th gear it does continue to creep until fuel cut... im not comprehending any of this! boost creep sounds like crabs to me.... i've never had either one... but something tells me i dont want it!

You sure the downpipe is stock? Just curious since it is used.

The intake could be the problem but it shouldnt be effecting your boost levels. Didnt you say the 4 code was for the wastegate. The waste gate actuator is electronic and I'm sure is monitored for feedback by the ECU. Something may be wrong with it and its not allowing the IWG to open properly. If an intake is the ONLY mod on it, I would take it to a dealer and let them fix it. Still under warranty?

As far as switching to an EWG, if you really want to there is no need to until you get a TBE and then its pure choice of either porting the IWG or switching to EWG. I am currently in the process of an EWG conversion and TXS TBE. I went with a catless TBE and slowboyracing.com brand up pipe flanged for a 38mm tial, which has a dump tube to the atmosphere. I have also heard that you can just put a small weld on the IWG arm so that it is not as permanent like completely welding it shut.
Here is a link to a thread I started asking questions about the install of the EWG. SBR up pipe w/ EWG

The stock DP is rather ugly and covered completely with thin metal heat shields. An aftermarket DP will look totally different and will be nice and smooth looking, no heat shields.
