Default Help! Need to remove reverse lock-out ring

Help! I'm attempting to replace the reverse lock-out ring trim piece under the shift knob of my 2004 STi. There's a pin that passes through the center of the slider piece.

Has anyone ever removed this pin before? I can't seem to get it to budge. I'm concerned that it might not be a good idea to really wack it with a hammer and a punch. Any suggestions?

Tim

On my '06 the punch size was 3/32.

undo the lever from the bottom , you need to get the reverse retainer ring tool and get the o ring so you have the lever free, and make somebody hold the lever for you while you use a 3/32 punch to get the pin out , be carefull and good luck

OK, I figured out that I could press the pin out with a C-clamp and a small metric bolt. Luckily, no need to wack it with a hammer.

So, now I have a different problem... The slider is off, but now to put the new one on it's place. Something odd has happened to the reverse lock-out. The slider wants to bounce upward to the reverse released position instead of staying down in the reverse lock-out position. Is the pin supposed to pass through/hold something in place. I must be missing something here. Is there a trick to re-assembling it?

you have to re-align the pin with the reverse lockout cable.

get under you car, fine the hinged reverse lockout deal on the transmission and lock it open. then you can get the pin placed correctly.

to figure out what i mean, search for a how-to on installing a short shifter.
