Default Just did Intake silencer removal, have to plug holes?

Hello

I just did the intake silencer removal mod, however, I have no way to plug the holes just yet.
I tried to just cut the bottom half of the silencer off, problem is I dont have anything sharp enough to chop it and I spent 30 minutes sawing at it with a kitchen knife to go like 1/4 in into it without cutting it - damn its thick..

To get to the question, until I can cut this and bolt it back on with the bottom sealed, is it okay to drive with both holes unplugged?
If its okay, do I have to plug them at all?

My concern is if I ever get caught in the rain(I dont purposely drive in the rain, yes yes I know - which makes no sense because it will see some snow fun) do I run the risk of hydrolocking or is that fender well pretty well protected by the fender liner? I know people run CAIs with no real risk unless they go through like 8 foot puddles but I just want to be 10000000% sure. I was able to reach my hand around the "ram air" hole to the airbox hole and was able to feel the paper filter(I have tiny hands), when I wash the car, can my filter get wet? Am I stressing over nothing?

Thanks.

I still have the stock air box minus the silencer, and it has no plugs or cover at all. I use the car everyday, rain or sine.

Thanks for the quick replys, its 11:35 and I know I wouldnt have been able to sleep without hearing that reassurance

I haven't even gotten a chance to hear the car so, I was just a big mess up to right now. Everyone tells me I take things too seriously, which I beleive now, but I thats the way I am with my things - I want to modify it, but I want to be taking care of it to the best of my ability at the same time.

Well, thanks again for the advice, its a huge load off my back.

I used a hacksaw to cut the silencer off (pics in journal) and decided to keep the snorkle (minus the silencer) in place open to the wheel well. With a K&N flat panel the sound is sweet!

What I did was that I cut the silencer part with a sawzall and I kept the snorkel. I tried to cut another peice of plastic and use some ****ing to make it fit on the silencer of the snorkel. Though the ****ing was all my friends and I had, we just decided to throw the idea away because it wouldn't stay together and I wasn't going to wait 2-12 hours.

I pulled the entire plastic *thing* out of there. I didn't cut anything. So far so good.

Invest in a hacksaw. I replaced mine with the GP Moto elbow just so I can revert back to stock if I needed to. After having taken my car in for warranty and no one noticing it, I probably would just hacksaw the snorkus to get the ram air affect from the intake snorkel AND the cold air from the fender well if I were to do it again. It's free and you can keep the hacksaw.

And no, water will not make it up there to hydrolock. If the water is that high, you have much great things to worry about....like your life.

Agreed!! I tried it capped off but in the end, having it pull cool air from the fender well made more sense to me. This is the poor mans CAI!!!!

Default several ways to remove the silencer

My friend and I both got our cars about the same time, I went the long way and removed the silencer through the wheel well and my friend just used the hacksaw. I followed the instuctions from the www.scoobytuner.com website

Taking the silence out through the wheelwell was a pain, but it made putting the GP Moto elbow very easy.

So my friend is pulling air through the wheelwell and I am using the stock air intake w/o the silencer. Only difference I have noticed is that my air filter doesn't get as dirty, other than that no difference.

On a similar note, I like the HSPN car's naca duct air intake. At first, I thought the air intake was for the brakes, but it is way too high. Cool mod

that's good information, dirty intake air = bad, so that's a pretty big difference imo.

Well, it can also mean less airflow. I ran mine with both ways and the filter dirt was the same. I think even the stock intake with the silencer has more airflow than the GP Moto elbow. Why? Because the silencer provides a large unrestricted air space in front of the filter. It even has a drain hole so water sucked in thru the snorkle when it's raining won't get to the filter. So when you mash on the gas from a stop there is plenty of air ready to go with very little restriction. It may be negligible but I think you have the ability to flow more air with an opening to the wheel well (like a CAI) than without it. Just my $0.02 worth.

I am trying to come up with my own heatshield but that dang ABS unit is kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilin me!!! I am trying to seclude the entire K&N filter from the engnie bay and the only openings to it will be the ones from the fender and I will cut one opening to have a modified (cut up) intake duct (the stock one) go into the chamber as well.

Do you guys know where I can get some of the hose used for the kool brake kit etc.?? I want to run some hose from the right Fog cover up to the fender opening that is pointing right into the filter. Any help would be appreciate.
