Default How To - Change Your Oil

I found this DIY Oil Change from Nasioc and it seemed pretty helpful. So I'll post this excellent write-up here for you IWSTi members who would want to change your own oil. This was done on a WRX, but it should be no different from the STi.

This well put write-up was written by "perret318" on Nasioc.

thats a pretty darn good writeup for those who are thinking about changing their own oil. I actually like changing my oil, well especially because I have the FUMUTO valve

Does anyone use the Fumoto Valve? Would it allow me to change my oil with out having to take off the splash gaurd every time?

i use the fumoto, its really really great, no leaks, no nothing. you can empty ur oil pan without taking off the spash guard BUT, the oil filter is a different story. i think its better to take off the splash guard.

i remember reading that someone changed their oil filter without taking off the guard, he said it did spill everywhere, but he just wiped it off.

its not that hard to take off the guard is it? i can do it in a minute and a half. i even only jack up one side of the car.

uh you are suppose to change the filter too everytime you change the oil....meaning splash guard off!

That's a misprint in the manual that Subaru still hasn't fixed. The correct level is 4.8 quarts. Somewhere in the Oil FAQ on NASIOC it explains it all.

the first time i changed my oil i didn't take the splash guard off. i was worried it would be a PITA to remove. boy was i wrong. changing the filter was a PITA and oil got EVERYWHERE. the next time i removed the splashguard and it was a billion times easier to change the oil and it didn't look like the Exxon Valdez under my car afterwards.

you could, and i know a lot of people do, but i wouldn't recommend it. too much oil is just as bad as not enough oil. get close, check with the dipstick, and add more oil until it gets to the middle of the 2 notches in the dipstick.

you mean between the 2 round holes or middle of top hole and very top notch thing? i usually fill mine up to top hole when it's cold and all the way to the top notch when the engine is hot. btw, dipstick on the sti sucks balls

er yea sorry, between the 2 round holes. the top notch means there is too much oil in the car.

basically you want the oil to fall somewhere between the 2 round holes.

sorry for the confusion. i've looked at too many dipsticks in the past few weeks with trying to fix a problem in my roommate's car, changing the oil on my mom's car, and helping a random person at the gas station last time i filled up.
