A +40 offset is really too low for proper Subaru fitment. It will result in premature bearing wear and bump steer problems. There is no reason that a +48 offset won't fit both the 04 and 05 Sti on an 8.5" wide wheel.

With most coilovers and aggressive camber settings, a +48 8.5 probably limits you to 245 tires. This isn't going to be a problem for many people, but I wouldn't say there is "no reason" to go below +48. People are using +20's for autoX.

It certainly is a good idea to consider stopping at +48 for street wheels, though. Especially with the 5X100 hub.
