Ihad a very aggressive tune on my 04 running 92oct. When I did run straight 100oct (not tuned for it) I noticed little gains

That's actually a good sign that your 92 tune was not knocking much. The only time you will feel gains running race gas without additional tuning is if your pump gas map was pulling timing due to knock.

hasnt AVCS been available on the STI since 04?....

Not on both the intake and exhaust cams side

Only on the intake cam has it been available on the EJ257 until 08. The EZ30 has had it since 01 or 02.
