In particular I was recalibrating the MAP sensor in the UTEC (the map sensor in the new car is not the same as the old), and I fat fingered it.. Since I was using the UTEC boost control in PID mode, it did a great job of retargeting the boost to his the 20psi... Unfortunately that ended up being about 24psi. First and second gear didn't hit that high (not enough load and duty cycle), but one nice long 4th gear pull, followed by some flashes up top seemed to be it. It had a small puff at idle... ah the sign of the ringland. As posted on Nasioc in a few places, that is where I discovered that the pistons are indeed the same as the previous year.. and indeed as fragile if you do something stupid. It was cool to take apart the new 08 motor and see how the exhaust AVCS setup looked.

I should add however that any agressive tune with Meth has some inherent danger if the meth system fails. For that reason I used the Aquamist stuff with the flow sensor and boost cut option. If the system fails, the boost will be wastegate.

Cheers,

Jeff Sponaugle
oh i see.. I didn't mean to come across with an attitude. Stupid me.. i couldn't find the post over at nasioc. What did you end up doing to remedy ? You dropped in some better pistons? The reason I ask is because I'm trying to get as much info as possible to plan my attack on the 08 when it arrives. Thanks for the explanation.

Yep.. 04, 05, 06, 07, and 08 are all the same pistons.

No worries.. I dropped in CPs, just because I had a set. The CPs are very very strong, which is nice on a car that I will be doing lots of experimenting with. You can always run the car as it is and wait for a problem, or jump in ahead of time. It is not that replacing the pistons is required. You can run a good tune and be very happy. The only downside is if something goes a little wrong, you can expect to break the ringlands. With the CPs you have a lot more resistance if you have a situation where knock occurs.

The CP's seem to be the consensus.. I definitely want the added piece of mind.. Thanks for the info.. I've found all your posts on both forums great. I come from an Acura and their forums and "experts" don't compare to you guys. Great stuff

so whats next to keep that torque curve going?
is it that the turbo gives up after 4k? or lack of fuel?

Thats 54,000 miles. And I red lined it on a daily basis with several runs a week up to 145mph on the back roads.

The PWI-1 is attached to the side of the windshield washer tank, and I use that tank as a source. It has a capacity of approximatly 4Ls, which seems to last a few tanks fulls of gas, depending on how I drive.

This setup looks like something worth trying. Ultimately I would like to see how much power the 08 is able to make with all the boltons one can do. I have not tried meth or alky yet, but 400lb ft of torque to the wheels sounds worth it to me.
