That's an insane amount of music. I have 3% his amount, lol..

It's only an issue if you are putting your files out to share.

You have to contact apple to be able to play those files. Not every play, but you have to be able to unlock the file to play it, which requires a talk with apple. If apple stopped replying, you could no longer unlock said files. Who knows, thye might also have a "mass de-authorize" plan in place.

You break the law by converting .m4p to .m4a? I haven't heard that. That's bs. If you buy it, you should be able to do what you want with it. Of course, you can't distribute/share it.

Yeah, you can not alter any file you get from iTunes legally. Its in the TOS.

Well, than Itunes shouldn't allow the feature... You don't do it with any crack/hack. You can do it within Itunes.
