Default 06 Aspen White STi & 06 Graphite Gray Evo IX SE Photoshoot

Posted this in my journal as well, but I want to put it here also for some photography feedback. I'm trying to get a little better at photography with my little point and shoot, and I haven't done a shoot with my best friend's new Evo yet, so we took a drive out to Red Rock Canyon here in Las Vegas. We went out a little early, I think the pictures would be much better if the sun was down a bit more, but I think they came out ok for what I had to work with. Enjoy

Never attempted rolling shots before. Also did not mess with any camera settings (left on auto), and just touched up color and contrast in photoshop.

All comments welcome.

Thanks,

-Marcus

--all of your shots are horribly soft as if they are all out of focus
--your composition makes the shots less desirable
--you have too many distractions in your shots (truck, tree that covers EVO, etc)
--besides these two, I wasn't very impressed with the skill aspect:

Im not sure if the softness is due to shake or if it is your camera but the best advice I can give you is to work on your composition. that is the hardest part of photography behind exposure.

Yeah I'm no expert by any means! I don't even have a tripod yet, do you think that might help them get in better focus? I think the camera is somewhat at fault but I know much better work can be done with the equipment I have. By composition do you mean placing the cars in the right spot against the background, or placing them in a better spot of the photo?

Thanks!

I thought I recognized that canyon. It's beautiful there.

Nice cars and pictures. I'm going back to Vegas this Friday actually.

a tripod can help but during the brightest part of the day, it shouldn't be necessary. im thinking it is your camera.

composition is how you frame your shot. your location, the amount of space and location of items in your shot, zoomed in/out, etc., all encompasses composition. when you have two items you can move, like those cars, that also plays a part in composition but it mainly involves the above mentioned. you should also note the items around your subject when you are shooting in order to make the subject(s) stand out (i.e. the truck, the tree covering the EVO and certain signs). some of these can assist with your shot (like out of focus grass/stalks) but done wrong they take away from your shot.

Yeah that makes sense. I never use my zoom because on my camera it decreases photo quality. My goal is not to be anywhere near a pro but I would like to make some decent photos, I'll probably invest in a nice camera in the next year or so, hopefully that helps with the focus aspect. The sites were uncommonly crowded, hence the truck and people in the background...definitely does take away from the focus of the cars.

Thanks for the tips!

Is that gap in the EVO bumper supposed to be that large?

Like I said in your journal nice pics, love the scenery and cars.

Also if you feel your pics need some editing, use photoshop. I was bored so I just did a quick photoshop on one of your pics.

don't worry, im no pro either but I have made a few bucks here and there for my shots. the thing you have to remember is that you want to tell a story with your shots unless all you're trying to do is just capture the moment. the difference between snapshots and photographs is whether or not there is a story to be told. this goes for almost 99% of photography.

work on your composition first before you go into post processing. then check your surroundings to make sure you don't have distractions. after that, you can fine tune your shooting. good luck.

No the driver side is not attached properly. He bought it used and modded and we just haven't gotten around to pulling the bumper and fixing it. Not sure if it's missing clips or hardware yet...good catch

That's pretty good for a quick chop. I usually only use PS for a quick contrast sharpening...how long and what kind of steps did you use for this? Sharpening? Saturation? Thanks

Thanks again man. For the most part these were just pictures, didn't look at it as trying to tell a story. Maybe next time instead of 80 random shots I'll do 40 and make them count with composition and storytelling
