I think of that sign as not offensive but informative. I mean half the times I stop for directions in urban areas the people behind the counter barely speak english. One time in San Diego the guy was gay and spanish. So he hardly spoke english and it was with a gay lisp that made it harder to understand.

I only need gas from a gas station, not some political commentary.

Someone actually paid to have that sign printed and posted. Wow.

You see, it has nothing to do with "deserving" or not deserving anyone or anything.

It's fairly obvious that the majority of gas stations are owned, if not owned and operated by middle eastern immigrants who don't seem to be concerned with the english language. They know enough to get them through the work day (sometimes) and to them thats good enough.

For some locals, such as the owners of Bills Valero gas station that this sign was at - stopping at a gas station while he was growing up meant more then just gas and go.

It meant a pack of smokes, a joke or two, running into at least 4 people you knew from school or work, answers to questions in regards to the local attractions, potentially an offer to race for money, and maybe a kiss on the cheek from the farmers daughter before her daddy came out with his change.

What do you get today other then a knock on your passenger rear window that you just washed which pisses you off, a random guy who only mumbles the word "YES?" because thats all he knows in english, who then proceeds to snatch your credit card out of your hand and charges you 35.91 becaus he wasn't courteous enough to top you up to 36.00 to make your banking a little easier.

Getting offended by my post, or that sign, or the fact that americans and americanized people in general like to feel at home when the are getting gas in todays world sounds like a personal complex to me.

^^^ Funny you bring that up, because where I'm from here in Texas everyone is a lot more "friendly" I guess you could say. I wouldn't go so far as to say kiss on the cheek friendly, but much more friendly than the places in the NE that I have been.

In NY we pump our own gas and I could give a isht if the guy speaks English or not, as long as he understands "20 on pump 5", which he does. In fact, I have never had a communication problem with ANY gas attendant or convenience store clerk.
Your stereotype of middle eastern immigrants is WAY OFF. I have worked with them for many years and only know a select few that aren't good with English, but that usually means they just got to this country. It takes a few years to learn a foreign language. I wonder how you'd do communication wise if you were to move to say France?(assuming you don't speak French)
Most of them are taught English in grade school and grow up bilingual. Many of them have advanced college degrees, Masters/MBAS, but are stuck doing menial jobs because they are waiting for their paperwork/green card.
Putting up a sign that obviously makes fun of a group of people and feeds some stupid stereotype does not say "Friendly hometown" store to me. Again, I would not give Bill my business.

Yikes OP...speaking of personal complexes...feel at home when getting gas?? I trust you have surveyed a representative portion of the population to figure out how many actually give a damn about their gas getting experiences (price aside ).

By the way, how again does having an even dollar amount make your banking easier?

Wait...maybe the non-English speaking immigrant is simply better at math than you, can handle the infinite complexity of fractional dollar amounts?

Why again should immigrants be concerned about their command of the English language (and I'm sure you routine stop to inquire about this concern as well) if it's good enough for them to get by and make a life? Because you say so?

PS - You also really don't need a 56k warning for one picture of that size...
