I would suggests going over to dpreview.com
It really depends on what he's looking for in a DSLR.

Nikon D80 with nice lens
Nikon D200 body only

My favorites that I have tested first hand, I have also tried the Rebel XT/XTi and found them flimsy compared to the tough and rugged Nikons.

My main shooter is a D200 and I love it.

Sorry, but like any human I have an opinion and this one I don't agree with. I have handled a few Nikons and thought the opposite, with my 20D and even the XT*, not to mention my 1D MKII N which is like a brick in build quality. It is out of the price range but just an example.

That said, I recommend for your dad to hold both and see what fits best in his hands and is easiest to use. If he wants to have a great choice in lenses, lean towards Nikon. If he wants more flash and a bit better ergonomics go lean towards Nikon.

Don't forget that you can get a nice body, but if you pair it with a bad lens you will lose quality and hate life.

If he isn't going to be making money with the camera I would recommend saving some money and going one model below or a used camera so he has some cash left for a good lens and other accessories.

I would also recommend the D200,D80,XTI,or 30D.

get the one he prefers to hold and shoot with. neither camera is "better" than the other except for a few pros & cons of each one and are both subjective. he needs to improve his skill before worrying about camera performance.

If he needs to camera now, an XTI (400D) or a 30D would be good. If he can wait until September or so, the 40D is going to be awesome. I'm definitely picking one up when they come out.

In the end, it's the glass that matters, not the camera (assuming you don't get a horrible camera ).

I just got a D80 with a 18-200mm VR lens about a month ago and I am really happy with it.

Well said Dark and of course the MK II is going to be a brick haha, it should be for that price tag. I must admit that canon makes some killer sharp lenses, but with the price hike with the "L" label it makes them out of reach.

Yea, thats the catch...but there are some 3rd party lenses that come close and even surpass some Canon lenses in certain areas

Grab a Nikon D40 (dont waste your money on the D40x) and get really good glass. Like the 18-200mm VR. CHeck out this guy. Its where I learned a lot about taking pictures. www.kenrockwell.com Go to the technical section. He has really great info on that site. Personally I think its better than Dpreview.

It's not that I don't have love for the nikon side. I just don't have love for the nikon glass like I do for canon.
