Which digital camera between the two?

I have narrowed down my search, and now I can decide between two canon's. I would like to get all of you opinions. Keep in mind, I use the camera for taking pictures of my car, events, ect. I am learning the photography world, learning how to use certain settings, ect. I am taking a photo class and practice with my buddys dlsr, but I need something for personal use and cant afford a new dslr.
The first is the CAnon A630
-8.0 MP
-ISO 80-800
-4x Zoom 35-1400mm
-adj shutter speeds 15sec-1/2500 sec
Canon SD 1000
-7.1 MP
-3x Zoom 35-105
-ISO 80-1600
adj shutter speeds 15-1/1500 sec
I am leaning torwards the SD 1000, since it has the rechargable lithium ion battery.
I dont think the difference in zoom would matter much to me, but I am not experienced enough yet to know if the difference in adj shutter speeds would matter in the future when I learn how to use them properly. Thanks for any help.

i just got the canon A640 and it kicks a$$ if that helps any, love this camera

Nikon D2H is my personal fav. but a monster to lug around... the D70 gets tons of use... love it.
Cannon does have good lenss'
