Default Educated Opinions from Photography Buffs?

Okay, my crap-a** Kodak Digital Camera died just as we exited a giant redwood grove onto a Monterey beach on horseback this weekend. Romantic moment with the family ruined by stupid Kodak.

Its time to get a grown-up camera. I need something durable, very durable. I have the Canon Elph Sport for most of our crazy outdoor activities, but I need a digital cuz that Advantix film is expensive like California gasoline.

Any opinions are welcomed. Thanks for the help.

are you looking for a regular point and shoot digital camera or or a SLR camera?

I was hoping for a point and shoot, a more advanced unit though. (Canon Cybershot-ish)
SLR would get a little bulky for the stuff we do on vacations...ie horses, kayaks, hikes and stuff..

Waterproof or water-resistant would be ideal. Maybe coated in rubber so it is mildly shock-proof?

FWIW I prefer Canon. I love my 30D.

All pics at the below link taken with my 30D.

That being said, I prefer to give advice on where to get good advice when I personally don't have the resources to physically examine and review a broad range of (product type here) - at any rate, hope that helps.

I appreciate the help. I just wanted to here from folks that have had good experiences, bad, etc. ie: "I dropped mine like 100 times and it still works great...blah, blah, blah"

I also prefer Canon and will probably stick within their product range.

Recently purchased a Canon PowerShot SD600 Digital Elph, fantastic performance thus far. I love the fact that it has a full manual mode along with an automatic setting. Also has the powershot feature which allows you to hold down the button and the camera continues to take photos until you let off. For around 250 dollars, cant beat it. Oh and its a 6mp.
EDIT: just took these to show some potential!!(the car pic was taken previously)

I have a Canon SD630 and it takes great pictures. It's 6mp, compact, and does the job. The only gripe i have with the canon digital cameras is the way the flash washes out the pics in Auto mode and HI-ISO mode. That's why I program it and it takes great pics!

If you are looking for durability as well, you may want to be careful with the canons because the lens scope pops out when you turn on the camera and if you drop it on the lens scope, it can break. Only warning that I can think of if you drop it.

Canon's point and shoots are the bombdiggity.

I took this shot with my Canon A710 IS...

The image stabilization is nice to have. It certainly doesn't eliminate the effects of camera shake but it helps. It also helps a lot for the occasions when I want to shoot some video with it.

As for dropping it... I'd suggest not doing that, heh. I haven't dropped mine yet because I always keep the strap around my wrist when I'm holding it.

I have a Sony Cybershot 7.2mgpxl that I picked up new for $20 (don't ask don't tell ) and I think it's great for just snapping shots (I have my Rebel for the serious stuff) Also sony makes a shock proof/ water resistant case for the camera. I believe they claim it's good up to 10ft under water. I haven't bought the case, but it's the only digital point and shoot camera that I know of with this accessory. Mine in a DSC-W70

My wife beat me to the punch. She bought a Canon A550. Ended up getting it for less than $80 with free cables and free photo printer. Not exactly what I wanted but, meh. We'll probably break it on our next vacation...lol

Thank you guys for the kind replies. The links and example photos were a great help.

The A550 is a really robust little camera, I several friends with that series and they take a lickin' and keep on flickr...n... Good choice. Plus, this way you can save money and buy a DSLR!
