Default SD Card

I have a Nikon S6 (your basic digital camera) and it used the SD memory cards. I bought my 256mb one from circuit city for about $30. Now when I go on amazon.com, I can get a 2GB one for only $13! Why is that?

Amazon may have more buying power than CC. If they get more from the manufacturer at once, the manufacturer often gives a price break. It would also depend on how long ago you bought the one from CC. Memory card prices have been dropping through the floor. Even if it was only a few months ago, that can mean big differences in price. Of course, this could all just mean CC is gouging. Hard to say.

I would say so. Amazon is really a sales avenue for many other companies now. Check that card, it's really being sold by another company. I would just check that company's return policy, etc but I would sure give that card a shot at that price. I may even pick one up for my new phone (it will take SD cards).

that one on amazon is just a standard SD card. you may have purchased a high speed card, which tends to be a little more expensive. but as klaymon mentioned, amazon can sell these a lot cheaper than CC because of buying power and distribution methods.

you can get a high speed, Sandisk Ultra II 2gb card at costco for around $35. I won't trust any other card except Sandisk.

I did neglect to mention that, but I figured the OP had determined whether they were the same class of card or not. However, I did shop around a little and it was about $35 in other places for the standard card.

I moved to Sandisk when I got my new camera. I got a 2GB Extreme IV CF card for my Canon 30D. That thing is incredibly fast.

The price of SD memory has gone down considerably recently also. Its now one of the cheapest (if not the cheapest) memory there is.

as a person who has purchased over 300 memory cards, I won't trust any of my important pictures with anything less than a Sandisk Ultra II card.

no card is 100% reliable but Sandisk does a very good job of keeping their number as close to that as possible...with lexar a close second.
