Default Photography n00b... Critiques please =)

Yo! I picked up photography as a new hobbie after I found out how good my pictures looked after I edited them a 'bit in photoshop. My weapon of choice is the Canon Rebel XT which my sister lent me for awhile. I will be purchasing an XTi soon so I can gain more experience and become a better photographer . Here are a few of my best shots that I took awhile ago, but would love some critiques to help better my skills. Thanks .

Not bad at all!

Tip: A good rule of thumb (not set in stone) is that you want to keep your shutter speed AT LEAST 1/focal length. Example....if you are using the kit lens and shooting at 18mm, your shutter speed needs to be AT LEAST 1/18 in order to keep the picture from blurring due to your movement of the camera.

Now In regard to the 1st and last pics, you need to use a faster shutter speed in order to eliminate blur from the subject moving. What's the correct speed to capture motion? Depends on how fast said subject is moving and the desire to have any blur at all. With the cat....I'd guesstimate around 1/100 or so. If available light is too poor to allow a shutter speed fast enough to capture the subject, as was the case here, you need to increase the ISO number. This increases the sensitivity of the cameras sensor to light and allows for a faster shutter speed at the cost of slightly more noise in the image.

In regard to the 3rd shot, be careful shooting in direct sun. The right side of the photo (the bright concrete wall) is a blown out (overexposed). Bright sun is usually a bad time to take photos....especially car photos.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice and comments! I am using the stock lense that usually comes with the camera. I'm not sure what it is, but it sure works :P. I don't really notice the little things, like trying to avoid the sun in pictures because of overexposure. I'll make sure to remember that next time!
