Thanks for the nice comments, and I'll definitely continue to post up images here. Don't give up... I've been taking pictures off and on since 1987, and only started to seriously get into it last summer. I still have a very long way to go, but it's been a fun and rewarding journey so far. Best of luck to you, and most importantly, enjoy it.

Hey Mike - Do you mind me asking what your exposure was for 34 & 35? 34 is sick with its crisp detail of the cars an the soft flow of the water and glow of the sign. I dig the tone of all of your images. Thanks for sharing them with us. - Chad

^^^ Hey Chad -- thanks a lot for the nice comments! I'll take a look at my settings when I get home. I shot everything in manual that night, and I'm usually good about remembering my exposure times, but right now (and this early in the morning), I'm having a tough time remembering. Based on the approximate aperture on #34, and remembering how dark it was when I shot it, the exposure was probably in the 15-20 second range. I got lucky since nobody walked through the frame and no cars drove by. #35 was much shorter, since that part of the lot was brighter (and the sun hadn't completely disappeared yet). So probably about 1 second... maybe even less.

Usually, however, I can get good water flow effects with a relatively fast shutter speed of 1/8 sec:

Handheld, no image stabilization on that one. I shot it with my nifty-fifty after having about 4 cups of coffee at breakfast. It was like 25 degrees outside (Wah Gwin Gwin Falls in Hood River, OR), though, so my hands probably froze in place as I took it.

to be quite honest, there isn't really any pointers you can receive except a few that you should just read up on. Understand what aperture, shutter speed, ISO, White Balance and Metering are and how they all correlate with each other and produce a photo. When you get a better understanding of that, you'll have a better understanding of how to take shots. But this all starts with practice & patience which can't be taught. go out, shoot (a lot) and learn from your mistakes. you can't expect shots like this without some practice first. Plus, some people just have an "eye" for composition and that in itself is 90% of photography.

Post Processing helps too...most of these shots aren't directly from the camera.

Default attempts

Hey Mike - So I made some attempts at evening pix and came up short. Not too sure if its my camera (Sony F-717, 5mp) or my settings. I tried to liven them up with PS but still pretty drab. I live very close to 67th and 101 so I tried the shopping center but MAN, my colors are not even as close to being balanced and natural as yours. Frustrating! I do better with daylight http://web.mac.com/banninginaz/iWeb/...hotofolio.html

Got any tips for my vehicle shots?

Damn, I can't get the attach files option to work. I'll email them to you. BTW, how do you get your attachments to appear large in the thread versus small attachment images?

Hey man, I got your email. I'll respond to you privately, but it's not your camera. Oh, and I'm not using attachments for my images; I'm hosting them on Photobucket.
