Default Playing around with image manipulation

So after using a mix of Microsoft Paint and some unix shell scripts to edit and resize my photos I thought I should get more with it and start using proper image manipulation tools. The version of Linux I use at work installs The Gimp, a freeware program similiar to Photoshop. Eventually I'll upgrade to Photoshop but for now The Gimp works pretty nice. I grabbed a few photos I have taken to see what I could do with them.

I know this is child's play for most of you but to me it's new and pretty cool. Saturation, greyscaling, adding borders, etc, I know it's basic stuff but wow it does really make a big different with photos. I think I should start shooting in vibrant mode too.

What kind of camera?

wow that is sick, are there any programs like this one that are free for the windows xp platform?

Also when you say shoot in vibrant mode, would that be the eqivalent if my canon sd800is shot a RAW image?

Nikon D50.

I used The Gimp which is free. I used it on my Linux desktop @ work but there is a Windows version as well. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

Vibrant mode is a mode that tells the camera to turn the saturation WAY up. It's different then shooting in RAW mode. Shooting in RAW mode might make image manipulation easier later on but I shoot in JPG.

The SD800 is nice, I'm looking at getting one after I get my tax refund to use as a backup camera when I go urban exploring, and also when I go out to the bars and I don't want to lug the D50 around. I used to use my old Canon S50 but after years of use and abuse it finally crapped out on me.

/ninja edit, I forgot a few of these were shot with my old S50. I'm losing it in my old age.

Yea I turned saturation ALL the way up which seems to be a popular thing to do in the UE world. Next time I think I'll tone it down a bit.
