go for a 1st gen trooper, you cannot kill them. Mine has 275k miles and I went 17k miles without checking or changing the oil (im stupid) 20k later I think its fine.

Plus you can pick up a good one for less than $1500

Ol' Grey 1990 Izuzu AWD Pickup. Going on 220K and still running like a champ. Still has the same battery after 4 years in the Sierra'! It has never failed to start even after extended bouts of inactivity...once while away for 6 months and buried in the snow. Custom exaust: muffler fell off the other day in traffic and now it is a straight pipe. This truck is so slow I have to beat the livin' daylites out of it just to race semi's up the Summit . The CD player is a deluxe Pioneer 6 disc changer that skips on anything less than new pavement but sounds amazing. The front left tire has been bald on the outside edge since I bought the car. I got it aligned and no worries there Funny thing is the gearbox shifts easier than my STi and the brakes are some of the best I've ever driven

well equipped with Jerry Garcia stickers and Jeff Gordon '24' sticker. Oh yeah the left headlite went out last year so I have to drive with the brights on
