The 50mm f/1.4 is an awesome lens. It's probably the one I should've bought, instead of my 50mm f/1.8 II. Lots of folks dismiss it and instead praise the 50mm f/1.8 II because of its bang-for-the-buck qualities (and good image quality), but the shots they take are like night and day. The additional cost is definitely justified, IMO. When I checked out my friend's Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, I just laughed and shook my head, because the build quality of the Nikkor lens was so much better.

However, my dad just surprised me with a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM for my early birthday (he's been very supportive of my photographic endeavors), so that should keep me occupied for a while. My first L lens, so I'm very excited!

It's all over for you now. Once you go L, you wont go back.

As to the 50mm debate.....the 1.4 is the better choice if it is going to see a lot of use. Better build, more accurate focus, quieter micro USM. The 1.8 is more suited to someone who will only use it on occasion or needs a cost effective low light option. I have both and there is no decernable difference in image quality. Best thing to do is just buy the 1.8....if you find you like the range and use it alot....buy the 1.4 and sell the 1.8. You should be able to get most of the $80 the 1.8 costs back.

Personally.....I just kept my 1.8 and leave a set of extension tubes attached for use as a psuedo macro lens. I'll eventually buy a 100mm macro, but it works well for the small amount of macro work I do.

OT, but I just wanted to say that I really enjoy looking at your pictures, and use your work as a guide and inspiration for my own. Lots of your pictures are benchmarks for me, and it pushes me to improve. Just wanted to say thanks -- keep up the great work!

I'm flattered Mike, thank you very much for the compliment. It's greatly appreciated.

I'm far from a pro, but even a blind squirrel gets a nut sometimes.
