its called macro mode and usually only found on p&s cameras. you can do macros on a DSLR but its lens dependent, not the camera.

there are a few people out there that like theirs, but I don't recommend Kodak digital cameras. being in the digital camera industry, i've seen more issues with them than anything good. stick to the big 4 and you'll be happier in the long run (nikon, canon, sony, fuji)

those look great too, just a bit too pricey for me right now. if i can find one in amazing condition, for a good price used then id go for it.

you're one of the few. I attempt to fix more kodak digital cameras than any other brand.

im not gonna comment about "professional" photography (i.e getting paid)... but what you are looking for is a camera that allows you manual control over the images you take... so you can compose them so they communicate in the way you want... (i.e. what's in focus across the frame?, what is blurry? how is motion captured? etc. etc.)

Just like our STI's come with a manual gearshift to allow us more control over the dynamics of the car, a manual camera gives you more options to compose the dynamics of the image... when used right this can change how the image is "read"...

so, you are looking for a camera with manual aperature control (f-stops), manual shutter control, and manual focus. Now, many cameras allow you to either automate these features OR turn the automation off... this is what you want... if you cant turn the automation off for any of these three, you won't have complete control over your images...

if you want to learn to take good pictures, you gotta spend some time really learning how the delicate interrelation of aperature, shutter and focus works... and how changing those values affects each picture you shoot... you will make decisions about these settings on a shot by shot basis... after a while it becomes second nature...

now, there are some point and shoot cameras that allow manual control, but if you really want to get into photography you want a camera with removable lenses... and it makes sense to buy a camera with a lot of good lenses to choose from... this is why most folks wind up with either Cannon or Nikon.. they have large systems of camera bodies and lenses...

dont ask the "should I get a cannon or Nikon question"... its like asking "STI or EVO"... passions run high in both camps... ha ha ha

I would suggest getting a used DSLR if you can... these puppies don't hold thier values so well... The Nikon D50 runs about $500 these days new, so with some luck you can find something that is in your price range...

now, traditional photographers are fanatical about lens quality... and spend big money on fast lenses... keep in mind that current DSLRs are nowhere near as resolute as film (there are gaps in the CCD - the thingy that turns light into "numbers") so you will not see the kind of benefit from a high quality lens that you would from a film camera... so don't go crazy on lenses untill you are sensitive enough to see where a lower quality lens is failing you...

good luck!

(I apologize if i sound like a stuffy art-school college professor above! It's just who I am... ha ha ha)

well!...that was put quite well. thanks again for all your help fellas. im still deciding on a camera for sure. i wish i could afford DSLR, but if i can find a good nikon or somthing that would be cool too. still leaning towards the kodak because the performance/price/options range level seems to be the best.
