I use 800 pixels wide maximum. Most people are at 1024x768 or higher, and the post window isn't quite full screen width. You want to be able to see it without having to scroll sideways.

Beyond that, I try to keep each picture 100 kilobytes or less. I use photoshop and adjust the compression to get a balance between size & detail.
