Default Post processing?

Hey guys, I recently bought a new Canon XSi and was wondering what post processing software you guys used and or recommend to use. I'm new to photography, so I still have much to learn. I read that many use photoshop cs3, but unfortunately that is not within my set budget ( $2-300ish). Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

if you can't afford photoshop look into gimp. however most people just "pirate" the program. I bought a license a long time ago and just keep upgrading it (5 or 4 times already). The cost of upgrade is a lot less than a new version. anyways check out gimp first. It may do all you want.

GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

for more advanced stuff you MAY need it, depending on your skill. I say this because a lot of people just don't have a clue about photo manipulation software and simply read "photoshop tutorials" and are clueless as to what they are doing, or they download a filter pack and just use that. I can tell you that you can do most if not everything you'll ever see done in photoshop can be done by other software so you don't really need to buy it.

it's a question of what you want to achieve. I've used photoshop since version 4 for both professional work and just my own stuff. I can tell you that most times, I get away using other tools that are lighter to run. At this point I only use PS when I'm 'serious' about something and have time to burn.

good luck.

You can find old copies of Photoshop on Ebay probably.

How about Photoshop Elements? If you're a beginner, CS3 will be overwhelming. It will do all of the things that you need to get started in image processing, and, it's within your budget.

Photoshop Elements is a good place to start. most of the power of photoshop but a little more user friendly.

i've used Gimp and knowing how it is supposed to work was still a very underpowered program for my liking. This is completely subjective though.

If you can find an old copy of Photoshop 7, you can probably get it for quite cheap and then just buy a photoshop cs or cs2 upgrade for about $50-100.
