Default Entry Level DSLR

I am looking taking up photography again and I am in the market for a DSLR camera. I am about to pull the trigger and buy a Sony A200 which is on sale for 499.00 and comes with a 18-70mm lens. I have looked at the Nikon D40 and D40x and the entry level Cannon Eos. Does anyone have any advice? Also, does anybody currently own a A200 series and have a review on it?

Here is the link to the Sony

my opinion is a personal opinion but the Sony DSLR's are crap. Limited lenses, horrible controls (well, on the A100) and the menus were not user friendly.

you'd be better off looking into a Canon 400d or a Nikon D80.

The D40 is a great little camera, just make sure to get the 18-135 lens with it.

D40x if you're just into casual pics. That cammera takes great pics, it's cheap, light, and easy to user. Has some advanced settings. In retrospect, I have to say I wish I had gotten the d80. Yeah it is heavier, more expensive, but you'll enjoy it more if you care to learn all it can do.

plus the autofocus on the 80 works much better.

alot of people on here use either the nikkon d40 or the cannon xt (xti). More lense choices I guess. Its like a red sox vs yankee or Ford vs GM thing with Nikkon and Cannon.

I have a cannon xt and I like it.

D60 or D80 or even the older D40x, they are all amazing. I love nikons reproduction of colors and how tough their bodies are.

Nikon FTW.

As for sony, parker hit the nail on the head...

D80 is a good prosumer level camera, as well as even a used D70. I used my D70 for years as a backup to my D200 (which will soon become a backup to a D300), and it was a great camera, easy to use, easy to learn on.

Also, although I shoot Nikon, you can also look into the Canon cameras as well, the 20D, 30D, and I guess now it's the 40D I have heard are all great cameras. Also Canon equipment tends to be cheaper and easier to get than popular Nikon gear (notorious for going on backorder, even batteries for my D200 went on backorder)

What subject matter are you looking to mainly go into?

Get a d80, pentax k10d, or canon, they all seem to be pretty good.

+ 1 More for the Nikon D40X. I've had the D50 for 2 years now and it's been bulletproof. Takes a great shot, tons of lens options, and has an easy user interface.

Although Cannon is still my favorite camera, I believe Nikon's offering for and entry level SLR is miles ahead of Cannon. When you get into the professional SLR world, it just boils down to personal preference.

I went with the d40x with the 55-200 Nikkor VR lens and some filters to go along with it. I am happy with it so far and I am sure that after a while I will be upgrading it to a D80.
