Great idea for a thread! I'll share some of my pics from the Ring.

Question-

Why do they allow people to graffiti the ring and how do they do it without getting nailed by a car?

I would think that paint or chalk would severely change the grip of the tires as you pass over it.

Well the Nurburgring will close the track occassionally for special events. One event is called Rock-am-Ring. It is a 3 day concert that hosts about 30-40 bands. Anywhere from Metallica to Aerosmith. People get wasted while camping at the 'Ring then decide to paint the track. It doesn't really effect the surface. At least I haven't noticed anything.

I thought some of the "grafitti" was from a local grade school also? ..and that some of it is "classic" and is preserved on the ring. I'm probably wrong..

However, I really envy you. To be able to visit the 'ring so often is just incredible. I wish I had the $$ to ship my car over there for a vacation. What a great road to tune a car for.

You're right. Some of the graffiti is preserved. The track was built in 1927 and to this date, it has not really been upgraded. There is a BMW emblem painted into one corner and I know that one is preserved and repainted every so often

The Ferodo's are only a temporary fix. I am throwing on a Porsche brake conversion after I get back from Iraq. Well that and forged pistons and a new AXXIS block. However, I am contemplating turning the Subie back into a daily driver and buying a Lotus Exige S 240 for the track. We'll have to see

to be honest, i think buying the lotus as a track car is a better idea.

Yeah, my friend Dave sold me on the Lotus when he took me for a ride. It's a damn good track car and even though he has a gen1 Elise with 150hp, he still keeps up with the Porsche GT3's with 8 minute lap times. Anyone that rides in that Lotus is screwed forever because all they want to do is sell their car and buy a Lotus. After all, why do we spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars trying to make our cars perform like a Lotus? Where's the logic?

well, i know my sti on the track will destroy any elise. An exige would probably hand me my ass though. I can't speak for everyone but i'm not trying to make my car perform like a lotus, or else that's what i would have gotten. Besides the fact that it's a completely different feel, the sti can be a daily driver and a track car whereas the lotus really can't.

I don't know how you're running your STi but I'm running 400whp. I will kill the Lotus's in the straights but there are so many corners on the 'Ring that they will get you in the end. Like in my first thread, I use a 1/4 tank of gas per lap on Nurburgring and I get about 20 laps out of a set of brake pads. Those Lotus's are getting 20 laps out of a tank of gas and they hardly ever need to change brake pads. I agree with you that it is a completely different feel and ride though.

yea, it's definitely nice not to have to worry about brake pads or gas as much. if you go to the ring alot it would definitely be worth it to have the lotus
