depends how much money you want to invest it on...
d80 would be a good starting point. d40 are good but they use af-s lense, not manual.

that all depends on if you're a nikon boy or canon man..lol. jk. It all depends on what kind of photography you're interested in. But really, it's all about the lenses. And that's the pricey part. Go to a store and really spend some time playing with it and ask questions.

I got a d40x. Great starters cammera and good enough for me. Anything more advanced and I would be wasting my money. But I have to say the d80 is pretty damn sweet. It's just that I'm not really into photography...just cars

im not saying d40x is bad choice but i like canon more then nikon.
b/c most of pro photographer used canon. but i think its all perferance issue.
from canon i would say XTi or XSi, and XSi is NEW camera!
from nikon i would say d40x or d60 and d60 is NEW camera!

oh yeah im using canon 40d and i Love it!!!

Good Luck Pickin one!!

Nikon D80 + 18-135 lens kit.

$965 Shipped, including 2GB memory card

If you want to go less expensive, a used D70s body ($350 on Ebay) + a new 18-135 lens ($265) would be a very good combo as well.

thanks for all the advice i agree that d40 or d80 are great leaning more toward the 80 cuz i think it will give me more room to grow. Although the xti seems kinda to be the fav among most crowds.

You can't go wrong with the XTi, I'm just partial to Nikon.

both are excellent cameras. the xti is more popular because there were a ton of companies selling it for dirt cheap.

go to a real camera store and play with as many as you can to see fit and feel and which one you prefer. buy body only and pick up a decent wide/normal lens that will get you started. My preference is the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8.

I would do some reading at both dpreview.com (go to their forums) as well as Fredmiranda.com. I just picked up a new Canon 40d a couple of weeks ago and I'm in love. If you went Nikon d80 you'd be getting a sick camera as well. The new Canon XSI (not XTI) will be an insane deal. The XTI is great as well.

yeah d80 or canon 30d are awesome camera. i personally have d80 and love the lense that it came with. much larger than d40. so it shoots much faster.

you can't really go wrong with any of these camera, just remember that like i said before d40 isn't manual. so i think you are getting a better dealw ith d80

I bought a canon 10D off of craigslist last Nov. to learn on and love it! I got it for $350 with lens but I probably sell it to my brother so I can upgrade to a xti or the new XSi.

great website to learn from.
