Default Lens recommendation for shooting cars?

I am looking for a lens that I can use to take still photos of my car. I have a Rebel XT camera and want something that is going to help create some very sharp images. I am looking around the price range of 500 bucks. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

I shoot professonally so I use L glass but heres non L glass thats great with cars, I bought it for my old car before I bought the high end one.

- Canon EF 10-22mm Superwide f/3.5-4.5 - lil more than 500 thou, however there is a sigma version of this for cheaper.

this is for still photos. racing is a whole diff ball game.

This depends on the types of photos you want. I usually shoot wide so I use either my Tokina 12-24, Tamron 17-50 and on occasion I use my 50.

I definitely think a telephoto is the best buy for "normal" looking photos so take a look at the 70-200 f/4 if you don't have a lot of money to spend.

how much sharper is the glass versus non-glass? Thanks.

I'm thinking about switching from Nikon D50 to a Canon 40D.

that 40D is fantastic by the way. Are you planning on shooting car while moving too? are you planning on making money with these shots? if so, save alittle more money and get yourself something nice.

I am not planning on making money or selling any of my photos. Simply for me to take better pics of my car. I went outside the other day to take pics of my STi after I put some stuff on it and I almost cried with how bad the pics looked. I was thinking a wide angle would be best but did not know if the 70-200 f4 L series lens would be ideal as well. The reviews on that lens have been very good and it is around 500 dollars. Not the IS version... Thanks for the advice. Any other opinions?

the 70-200 f4 L is a good choice. And from what you just said... it's good enough for what you wanna do. go for it.

Don't forget about post-processing, it's as important as the picture IMO. I got away with using p&s cameras for years 'cause I was good at PP.

Don't disagree w/ post processing. Just want something that will make it a little easier. It is between the 70-200 L and the 10-22 superwide. I will rent each lens and see which is more to my needs. Thanks for all the positive recommendations!

Well it depends on your range and whether you will be shooting those other vehicles out of that car trunk at day or night. Here are some options:

why do you want to switch? Good glass can and usually is sharper than "cheaper" glass but both camps have them. I would say that most of the time the image will be sharper with the settings you use vs. the camera and lens you use. which leads me to my usual saying...

Photography is 85% skill, 10% equipment, and 5% luck.
