Default Reccomend me a new lens - Canon Rebel XT

Ive had the Rebel XT since it came out basically. Its an awesome camera and I have reccomended it to many others as I have had a really positive experience with it. I feel as if I am maxed out on the kit lens because I have been shooting with it for about 2 years now and while the pictures are coming out really good, I know I can do better with a better lens.

Im not trying to break the wallet, but I dont mind paying for something thats going to give me better quality.

I mainly take pictures of cars, lights, and landscapes.

I use the camera a few times a week

So let me know what you think about the subject. Maybe even reccomend a new camera? Who knows...Ive been playing with my buddies new nikon d40x and im jealous he has a bit of a bigger screen. His pics come out really nice and hes a total noob! I know the Xti comes with the larger screen, I guess its just a nice feature...

What exact lens do you have now?

For example I have: Canon 30D w/following lenses

Canon 28-70mm L f2.8
Canon 10-22mm E-FS f3.5-4.5
Canon 28-135mm IS f3.5-5.6
Do you use a tripod?

What type of lens do you want- wide angle/ultrawide, standard (50mm-70mm range), telephoto? Fixed length or Zoom so many choices...

What is it that you're not happy about with your current setup?

I think if you want picture quality go with an L - glass lens. Yeah the price is probably the same as a new body but the image quality you get with better glass is worth the investment.

For wide angle I would go with 17-40 f/4L (Around $600).
And for a more normal range of shooting I would go with 24-70 f/2.8L (Around $1,000)

I personally have both lenses, but the 24-70 is on my Canon 20D 95% of the time. Its fast and gives excellent picture quality.

I have the kit lens, EFS 18-55.

I would like better picture quality as well as something for those nice wide shots.

Its not that I am not happy, just looking to step it up to the next level, if that makes any sense.

Alpha, a $1000 lens isnt in my budget right now, sorry

I would totally recommend the 2 Canon primes I have that I bought for my XT after getting tired of the stock 18-55. I have the 28mm 1.8 EF and the 85mm 1.8 EF. The two cover my usual focal range well and I really enjoy shooting with primes, I'm forced to compose my shots better and really get more creative without the use of zoom. I got both with lens hoods and filters for $700 I believe. F 1.8 is great for low light and portrait situations and your not going to get that low with a moderately priced zoom.

If you don't have the coin for L glass, i'd look 3rd party. For wide angle shots, i'd look into the Sigma 10-20 or the Tokina 12-24. I have the Tokina and love the lens.

if you're looking on the telephoto end, get the 70-200 f/4 (Image Stab. if you can afford it)

A few of my favorites

- Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8L ($1200)
- Canon EF 70-200mm IS 2.8L ($1800)
- Canon EF 10-22mm Superwide f/3.5-4.5 ($675)

Some of the best buts i've ever made. All ones i use when I shoot cars and racing. You can find most of them used for below 1k

OK I have done some more research and decided I want to go for a wide angle lens first.

Ive decided on the following:
Canon 10-22mm, F/3.5-4.5 -$614
Hoya 77m multi coated ultra thin filter (never used filters before) $83
Canon Lens Hood $36

Didnt originally plan on spending this much money but I came down to the conclusion that my lens is a POS and its time for an upgrade after about 2 years of using this kit lens.

If you want to save some coin, definitely consider the Tokina 12-24 or sigma 10-20. The filter will be somewhat expensive and I definitely suggest that ultra thin one. The tokina and sigma come with the lens hood.

Saving is always good

Just dont want to get something and regret not opting for the better lens.

If you can prove to me somehow that I should just go with the lesser expensive version of a wide angle lens, that would help a lot!

So after reading the reviews, as assumed, the canon provides the best picture quality.

The pictures of the cropped image really convinced me in this review
Canon 10-22mm Review

Yes its a bit more, but I would think its worth it.

I wouldn't discount the Canon lens for being a great lens but I highly doubt you'd be able to tell any differences between the two lenses...especially any differences that would justify the difference in price.

The Tokina is a great wide angle lens, constant f/4, and great build. The price and name definitely shouldn't be looked at as a lesser product.
