Default New Camera . . . Now what?

So for my bday I got just what I asked for, Cannon EOS XT Digital camera and a tripod to mess around with.

I'm not by any means a pro photographer but I'd like to play around and such.

Right now the only lense I have for her is the standard 18-55mm one and I'm looking to upgrade to something a little nicer but I'm kind of a newbie photo geek.

Can any of you better picture takers who know what the hell they are talking about because I don't help me out??

I'll try to post up some shots I took the past two days.

Also, just take a ton of pictures., even if they are around the house. The more pictures you take and play with the settings, the better you will get with the cam.
