So don't open it all the way up to f/1.8. Actually your sharpest images on this lens won't be coming from that setting.

Bringing this thread back from the dead... im in the market for a lens for my D40 as well, looking for something with VR, but since im a newb im not sure what lens I should be looking at ... I've heard good things about the 18-200, but again, have absolutely NO knowledge of the subject, so its time to learn

Yeah, I've heard that the VR 18-200 is the ultimate "walking around" lens. I'm looking at the 80-200 f/2.8 myself, but I worship bokeh.

In all honesty, the D80's 18-135 kit lens is a really nice lens as well.

How does the 18-135 compare to the d40's 18-55? (obviously you get more range with the 135) How is shooting at 135 without VR?

I assume the vibration reduction of the 18-200 is in the lens and will work with the d40?

The 135 is heads above the 55, in glass, clarity, and range, and there's no need for VR with it.

I would assume that as well, but I haven't checked, I was thinking D80 in my mind (since I'd like to have that lens as well ).

I was hoping that was the case. The 18-135 will most likely be my next lens.

I just saw that Tamron is making the 28-75 with the built-in motor for use on the d40/d60.

While it isn't very wide, it is a very nice lens.

UWA go with Sigma 10-20 as it durability is better than Tokina and Tamrons UWA lens... you can just shoot at 18mm on your d40 with your 18-55mm lens to get wide angle shots but if your doing landscaping, then go with a lower "mm" lens either fixed focal lengths/prime or not.

is the Sigma HSM? If not, then he'll be manually focusing.

Had the kit 70-300 with my D70s and upgraded to the 80-200 2.8 for my D200. The improvement was from etch-a-sketch to HD.

My all around fav is the 28-70 2.8. It's a bit heavy, but the results are worth it.

I'm getting the vr 18-200. hopefully it's good. I will post a review once I make the purchase.
