Default Ben: Before I drop dime, is this the right lens?

Ben I finally got the money to buy that lens you were telling me to get (to be used at sporting events)

Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS USM AF
Canon | 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Autofocus Lens | 7042A002 | B&H

Also, Is this the right Extension?
Canon | Extension Tube EF 12 II | 9198A001 | B&H Photo Video

Thanks!

the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is a great lens...top of the line in that category. Depending on the distance you're shooting from, i'd also look into the 100-400...

Canon | 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens | 2577A002

And you're probably looking for a teleconverter, not an extension tube:
Canon | 1.4x EF Extender II | 6845A004 | B&H Photo Video

or

Canon | 2x EF Extender II | 6846A004 | B&H Photo Video

I have the non-IS version of that L lense and love it, not to mention it was 1/3 the cost.

A lot of the games I shoot go later into the evening though, so the IS would allow me to shoot for a bit later into the game by allowing me to slow down the shutter to properly expose.

Yeah, you don't need the extender. They are for macro photography...pretty much the opposite of what you're looking for...hehe. The teleconverter that Parker suggested is what you need. Keep in mind your f/2.8 lens becomes a f/4 lens after you add the teleconverter.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier.

Yes, that's the right lens. However, you don't want an extension tube, you want the 1.4x extender that parker already linked. While you could use the 2x extender, you'll see a big difference in image quality when you go from the 1.4 to the 2x. The 1.4x doesn't reduce IQ much, but the 2x is very noticeable IQ loss.
