Good stuff, Ben -- thanks for taking the time to put that together. Easily digestible and understandable, eclipsing some of the guides I've seen on photo-specific sites.

Excellent thread Ben!

I took your ISO demo picture and added a third part to it. A quick demonstration of what kind of "rescue" is feasible with noisy images. Not the best demonstration, really, since it's a little too good since a lot of the photo is out of focus. On other images I've used Neat Image with that had more focused detail, the penalty for noise reduction was a noticable softening of the image.

Very nice writeup Ben. It's easy to understand and relate.

Have you thought about adding a white balance chapter? What it is, how to properly set it, etc.

not to piss on your thread Ben, but if anyone wants something a little more interactive, check out this site:

Enjoy! Digital SLR camera

granted, it is a canon site :booooooo: , but the information is very well said. Click the links at the top to go to different topics.

and for you Nikon peeps, Tv is the same as "S" and Av is the same as "A".

This thread is just what I needed, but I found it a day late, having pm'd Mike (ghibli99) some stupid n00b questions already.

For us n00bs, maybe a picture-specific A/SS/ISO cheat-sheet could help as well (dunno really, just fishing). For example, if someone really likes to shoot vehicles at sunset sans the flash, and really likes the subject to pop, his A/SS/ISO should probably be XX/XX/XX. Just a thought.

Thanks again,

Andrew
