Default D40x

So guys, I have wanted a camera for awhile now but haven't really researched them. I have a friend who is a Nikon whore (he currently has a D80 w/hella goodies) and we saw a new D40x on sale for only $560 and it comes with a lens that I don't know the specs of.

Anyway, what do YOU guys think about this camera.

I was messing with it in the store and was overwhelmed with it's capabilities but I know I will learn once I get it. It will be my first NICE digital camera but wanted some opinions before I bought it. CHIME IN CAMERA WHORES...

D40 FTW - can't beat it for the $. I would go for the D40 vs the D40x. You can save more $ and put it towards glass.

D40 is just a small step down from the functions that a D80 has. If you don't have any pressing need for any of those missing functions, get that D40. Nikon makes a hell of a camera. I've got a D80 but would definitely recommend getting something that's in your budget. If that's the D40, then you will have no complaints.

definitely get the d40 over the d40x. I think it is a great starter camera but find it to be very limiting. Plus, I can't stand the idea of not having a second LCD display for camera settings.

If you can afford it, i'd highly suggest getting a d80 body and either a nikon 18-70 lens or a Tamron 17-50 lens. great body, good for a beginner and advanced enough to where you wouldn't feel limited after learning the d40's functions.

I don't prefer Canon but they offer the XT and XTi, which are entry level cameras as well.

I have a D50. I LOVE IT. A buddy of mine bought the D40 before he got out of the military and he loved it too. I played with it a little bit. To me, the D40 is for the very entry level photographer. The it has like 2 or 3 more modes than my D50, the ease of use compared to mine is better for beginners, and it's a smaller body. Mine is only a 6mp camera but for what I take pictures of, which is mostly our families and STi's , 6mp is more than enough. I don't plan on printing anything bigger than 5x7 anyways. Even though I can go as big as 11x13 if I really wanted too.

Just remember what kind of photos you will be taking and get a camera that will suite your needs. The D40 is a perfect entry level D-SLR. The price is very nice too.
