I was all set to get a XTi/18-55/75-300/430EX kit for $999, and then today I stopped by Frys and had a peek at the full range of Canon DSLRs. In particular, I compared an XTi and 30D side-by-side, and wow the 30D feels much better in my hands. Small it ain't, but that's what I liked about it. Fit perfectly. The XTi didn't really feel too small until I picked up that 30D.

Dammit!

Hahahaha. Oh well. It's only money, right? And after dropping over $10K on toys for the STI, I can hardly complain about spending a few hundred extra on the camera.

No, I didn't. Frys was 899 for the XTi kit, which is $150 too much, and I didn't know what a good price for the 30D body would be, so I decided to come home and do a bit of research. They had the 30D body for $899, looks like I should have bought it.

Bleh. I hate they way they feel. It only adds height to the camera any how. People with large hands usually have large/long fingers. They just don't work as well with the Rebel/XT/XTI bodies in my experiences.

Being that the 30d body is made of magnesium, it should feel a lot better than the plastic body of the XT/XTI. The 30d is a lot of camera too.

good choice! and that "kit" lens is actually very nice. Not as fast as others but it will do you just fine for quite some time.

I'm thinking it will be a good everyday lens for my uses for quite a while, certainly until I get significantly more skilled as a photographer. I will get a longer reach lens in a few months, though, when track season rolls back around. Getting decent shots of cars from a hundred yards away requires more than 85mm.

Baby camera, meet Daddy... (and the camera I used to take this picture makes the S2 look like Daddy)

I know how ya feel . I've spent the last 24 hours taking over 600 pictures of random things

However, I have a couple big specks of dust on the sensor . Didn't notice them during my night shooting last evening, but during the day shots I've done today it's been very noticable, especially at f/11. I had the cap off for all of five seconds while I put on the lens, and I managed to get it dirty?? Damn. Now I gotta learn how to clean it already. I was hoping to put that off a while .

I really don't have much to compare it to, except my S2, and it handily outperforms the S2 in every way except for reach. Judging by the reviews on the forum, it's a good kit lens but may not be the best choice for $500 if you were shopping for a lens by itself. It seems to AF fast enough for me, but again I have a poor reference to compare it to, everything this camera does blows me away and I expect that would also be true of the 17-55 that ships in an XT/XTi kit.

I've got nothing which is particularly worthy of sharing at this point, I'm still playing trying to get a feel for the fun things I can do with this. With that caveat in mind, what I do have to share is a couple of night shots I made (just in front of my own house, now that I'm starting to get a feel for the right way to do night shots I'm going to go find some scenery more interesting )...

This I like except for the big mailbox in the way. And this is with f/4.5, which is all wrong and so it's a bit soft. In general I still like the photo, though.

This was at f/10, which is a much better choice. Now I just need a better location.

The weather is supposed to dry out a bit this next week, that will make it easier to get outside and find better subjects. Maybe even the STi if it dries out enough to justify washing it . For photos that are at least better than total crap, I'm keeping my ongoing gallery here: 30D
