Default good easy digital camera

Greetings and salutations,

I come needing help. In the next 7 months I will be in Brazil, Argentina, China, Spain, Canada and France. I know, poor me. I am NOT a camera techy guy. I need a camera under $600 with more then 10 megapixels and I do not need SLR. I need a camera that fits in my pocket since i will be in some shady areas. I want to capture all of my moments with little issues. I heard the canon G9 is a great camera, it is 12.1 mp and under $500. What does the OT suggest?

thank you

I recently got a Canon SD650 for work and its pretty nice and easy to use. Picture quality is pretty good out of a point and shoot in my opinion. It would be a nice walk around camera.

The Canon A650 is basically a less expensive G9. Same lens, same sensor. The A650 has a flip-out screen, though, which is a really nice thing to have. I'd only buy a G9 if you need an external flash, otherwise the A650's screen wins.

If you want something small, look into Fuji's F50fd. They use the largest image sensor in a compact (just barely) for decent low-light shooting.

A 2GB card is probably enough (expect 600 pictures out of that), but since memory is so cheap, there's no reason not to get 4gb or more.

Rugby- It is a great magazine, but I get so many other in print resources already I just cannot find time to read another. I read the Journal daily, Investors business daily, the times daily, maxim ha, and popular science, not to mention my personal reading. Bad excuse I know. I thank you all for the advice and i shall let you know what i choose. I was told it does not matter how many MP a camera has , but the sensor is the most important part... can anyone expand on that? Thanks.

definitely good information. the only thing i'd change on here is get a few smaller cards rather than one big card. I'd get several 1gb cards for $19 each rather than a 4gb card for $40. plus, not all cameras can format/use cards larger than 2gb so check the product you're buying first if this is of concern to you.
