-for d40
Nikon USA: D40 Kit

-for d40x
Nikon USA: D40x (body only)

obviously d40x is better. but i don't know if its worth the extra 200 bucks. Or does it make much difference...

I can't give an opinion because I am looking as well... I've heard good things about the D40 as far as a starter camera though. This is the best price I found: Nikon-D40-Kit-w/18-55-f/3.5-5.6G-ED-II-AF-S-DX-Zoom-Nikkor-Lens

Be very, very careful if you buy a camera from a random online camera store you haven't heard of before...for example, I think this is them. In fact, under NO circumstance would I ever deal with one of these companies...I'd very strongly suggest the same.

Always check resellerratings.com for these shops...some are just obvious scams.

Hi, I'm an avid Nikon fan/user currently with a D80 and many lenses. Honestly, a good friend of mine was having this same debate. This what I told him and he ended up with the d40... "Go for the d40 and save $200 to put down on some new glass."

I would get the d40 with the kit 18-55mm lense and get the 55-200mm VR lense to go along with it (about $250). Megapixels are more of a marketing thing for non commercial users. The d40 has the same sensor in the incredible d50 (previously owned). Although the d40x has almost 2x the MPs, you don't really need them. The the pixels are bigger on the d40 and is able to caputre more light/detail. The d40's sensor has already been tried and proven. Also, with less MPs, you'll have faster downloads to the 'puter from the card/camera, you'll be able to put more shots on a single memory card. You just don't need 10mp in that type of camera to produce excellent shots at 18x24. I have an awesome shot of the moon that I used with my d50 (same sensor)...

As a nikon D200 owner, I will definitely recommend the D40, its small, light, and produces some amazing pictures, what more could you ask for?

Go for it!

and as a d200 owner, I also second the d40 but don't feel you need to step up to the d40x for the price. if anything, save that money for better glass or just go straight to the d80. a used d50 wouldn't be a bad buy either

Keep in mind that you will only have autofocus with Nikon's AF-S lenses with the D40 and D40x. Non AF-S lenses will still mount and work, but you will have to manual focus. Not sure if that's a big deal to you. It would be for me since I love my prime lenses and none of them are AF-S.

I went to costco and they had d40x with a kit. which included 200mm vr lense, and standard lense, memory card 1gb, carrying case, plus some software and dvds. for 899. which was way cheaper than most of the stores. So i got it!
And i love it it already, i'll take some shots and let me know how you feel

great kill! costco is a great place for things like this. just remember what was posted above...you can only autofocus with AF-S lenses.

AF-S lenses focus using an internal motor driven by the camera's electronics. AF lenses focus using a screw driven motor driven by the camera. The d40 doesn't have this screw drive on the body, therefore making it unable to focus standard AF lenses.

d40 w/ no screw drive:

d80 w/ screw drive (bottom left of metal ring):
