god i love the smell of api rounds in the morning.
May come in handy after Obama gets a bullet in the head and US wide riots take place.

Doesn't this sound a lot like the 70's? I can say I didn't grow up in the 70's but from stories I've heard this is the exact same thing. We're running out of OIL!!! We're going to have to ration it, oh no. We only have so many years of it left. Emissions in cars must be lowered!!! It sounds like history repeating it's self. I think oil will be around for a while, in the mean time I agree we should seek other sources but damn people are getting crazy over this like right now. IMO I think the enviormentalist are driving the price of all this to high along with the speculators. Also I found something interesting out, the middle east isn't our number 1 supplier, they are the 3rd, Mexico I think is one and Canada is 2. Anyway I guess we'll see what the future brings us.

Imagine the economic impact it would have if the US took it's head out of its a$$ and started building a huge energy infrastructure (wind, wave, solar, nuclear) and everyone started driving american made electric cars (think lotus with V8 torque). It would also allow us to pull resources from securing our oil needs (Iraq). The number of things that would become cheap and viable with an energy surplus would be revolutionary.
The problem with building infrastructure like that in NIMBY, or not in my back yard. In MA there are huge protests over building wind farms in the ocean because it spoils views from the cape and there are huge legal battles. In the proposed sites for new nuclear power plants there are also lots of law suits being thrown around trying to block building them. Anytime a large hydroelectric plant is suggested the local populace and the environmentalists get into an uproar over local wildlife and water rights. Building infrastructure takes a long time even without these significant legal hurdles.

That being said though, there is a lot of good that comes out of an electric motor. Electric motors make peak torque at 0 RPM. That means if you have a 300 ft/lb engine it makes that as soon as you open up all the juice. Peak torque hits as fast as you can floor the throttle. There are a number of race teams that drag race electric cars that run 10 second 1/4 miles and faster. Hell there is a company out there already selling a supercar run with an electric motor. The only problem we have is that, while our nation runs on a coal burning power grid you are trading tail pipe emissions for smoke stack emissions. Its not as green as everyone thinks. Also the mining of Lithium and other heavy metals used in the battery packs causes huge environmental devastation. The dead zone around the Canadian lithium mines used to produce battery packs for Priuses is visible from space.

I understand all of these issues, but all the dumb a$$es need to realize that it is the thing to do, not just for environmental reasons but mostly for economic reasons. The lithium mines are a serious problem, hopefully battery technology can advance to using less or not at all. The problem is too many people are saying that things can't get done, we just need strong leaders who will stfu and do it. I'm ready to find myself some really windy land somewhere and buy it, then call some wind generating company and tell them I will lease the hell out of that land. I actually think the windmills add to certain scenery.

^ agreed, people should just start doing instead of being so stubborn saying, "ah we'll have enough" or "ah the environment is fine" (mostly coming from the older generations who really dont give a sh!t about us, the younger generation who will have to deal with fixing the mess)...all until the day comes that we unexpectedly run out or they stop selling to us.
