If you're gonna keep calling it a crotch bike, get the wrx

Performance wise, bikes are nearly impossible to beat for the price. If I'm not mistaken, 13 grand will put you in a top of the line performance bike.

However, if you don't have a second car, a motorcycle is not the way to go -- especially if you live somewhere that doesn't have a lot of public transportation and gets bad weather.

From a safety perspective -- the car is also a better choice, but I'm sure you've thought that part through.

I saw go for the WRX. Bikes are awesome machines, but a little too much danger/on the edge for me. This is coming from 3 1/2 years of handling auto claims. There is some scary isht out there..

As for the classes, I highly recommend the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foudation) classes, they will teach you some good practical riding skills. A lot of insurance companies offer reduced prices if you have passed their course also. But like everything else, theory =/= first hand experience. You aren't going to come out of the class knowing how to put your knee down going around a corner. That's where Keith Code and Eddie Spencer type of classes come in later. When/If you do get a bike, work your way up the bike chain. I wouldn't go bigger than a 600 class bike for a first one. And used 600s are where the best deals are anyways.

Wasn't trying to be snarky with my earlier comment, just no one I know of who rides sportsbikes calls them crotchrockets unless they're talking to nonriders, "I ride a cbr1000rr. Yeah, that's a crotchrocket," kind of statement.
And it just plain sounds weird. Who wants to hear the word crotch?
