All that you have to do is datalog while running a tank of various brands of gas. Trust me, YOU WILL SEE KNOCK EVENTS when running off brand gas. The additives that the top brands use makes a huge difference in how happy your car is. I've seen it first hand and my tuner talks about it all of the time. Run off brand gas if you want...

Other than that, all gasoline is the same. I don't understand why people will never get this and they "think" that one brand is better for their car than another. The safest thing you can do is tank up at numerous different gas stations using the same octane. One thing that you DO want to avoid is tanking up when the tanker truck is there, has just pulled in, or has just left. The gas stations tanks are

a) low on fuel which is not good
b) low on fuel which is not good
c) has just stirred up everything that is at the bottom of the tank, increasing your chances for taking in some dirty gasoline.

How diluted do you want your gas

It's like adding cream to coffee, the effective "caffeine" rating has dropped as opposed to drinking it black.


I use 76 gas. I have logged numerous different brand gas and find that 76 always leaves my Knock correction table empty.

I run Shell and if for some reason I'm not near a Shell, then I do 76 (they sell 100 octane)!

There was an article this last year when they went around and tested the octanes of most of the major gas brands. Basically they were looking for howly closely each brand met their claimed ratings. The only results I remember was that Exxon/Mobil was one of the lower ones and Shell was among the higher ones (or did I reverse that? ). By low and high, I mean 92.5 and 93.1 instead of just "93". Might explain some people's experiences.

dammit. i've been filling up at a station with a gas tanker there countless times already. good amount of my miles come from highway journeys (I-95 driving back and forth to jersey when i go to visit and whatnot). and when i make those trips i almost always go in the middle of the night or very early dawn hours filling up right before getting on to the highway but which of course, when the stations are getting their fills for the day.

for some reason i too feel better running with shell and sunoco while staying away from bp. and i'd never go to those really cheap never heard of stations. (cheap looking rather, is what i meant, because gas is not cheap these days)*
