To anyone interested Maya calendar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. There was a Discovery Channel show on this topic and went a little more in depth... Though the Mayan are not the only "dooms day sayers"... What can frighten people is that so many of the so called Prophesiers (bibles included) elude to the end of the world as we know it at or around the turn of the century... 2012 isn't that far off the turn of the century.

Late, actually it isn't a "once in a few billions years" cosmic occurrence... Scientist’s estimate that is happens every 6,000 years or so (they have it down to an exact number)... The odd thing about that is the occurrence falls on the exact date the Mayan predicted the end of the world as we know it (basically the end of their calendar).

For those interested Edgar Cayce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is an interesting read as well... Some of his predictions and correlations with recent events and future events are rather engrossing.

I for one am open minded... If it happens it happens, but I do find all these prophesies to be intriguing.

I dunno.... me and my girlfriend have had endless talks and google sessions because she is terrified that it really is gonna end. the whole Mayan calender crap is dumb, one guy pretty much got tired of writing a calender 100s of 1000s of years into the future and said okay im done. as for the scientific side of the story, im not sure, i still cannot grasp the concept of the earth just "ending" a perfect example was what someone posted a few posts up about how its almost like someone developing a brain tumor and dying seconds later.... doesnt seem possible. if it were to happen, it would take a while, but i guess we will have to wait until 12/21/2012 to see.

Quickly! Everyone write an alarmist book about 2012 so we get rich!
I've heard a lot about 2012 and I think it would be an interesting experience, but I doubt it would happen. But if it does, learn to swim!

The Mayan calendar thing isn't that the calendar ends, its that the 3 calendars that they used have different lengths, so they start/stop on different days. every 5 or 6 thousand years or so (I forget the actual number) they align and all three end on the same day. In Mayan myth, each time in the past that they've aligned, it has signaled a major earth event (the first one was when the gods created the earth, the second when the gods created man, or something like that) so the coming 2012 date would signal a huge shift, and the world as we know it would end. whether man would still exist or not isn't specified by the mayans.

The reason we don't dismiss this as just mythology is because the mayan's solar calendar is actually more accurate than the one that we currently use, they definately had a good bit of insight into the workings of the solar system.

Then, theres the sunspot activity that's going to give us all skin cancer....or burn us all alive...who knows.

then theres the whole polar shift thing. That one is most likely BS, since I have no idea how the crossing of the galactic plane has anything to do with the earths magnetic field. The magnetic field is caused and regulated solely by the liquid iron in the earths core moving around, and its not going to just switch directions over night. It does reverse periodically (I think on average its like every 100k years, and we're about 200k years overdue for a reversal) but its a long process. The reversal itself isn't actually what would cause problems, its the period in between during which the earth's magnetic field is much weaker than what it normally is, which allows way more cosmic radiation to get to us, and presumably kills us all if we don't wear lead lined suits.

There are alot of predictions for the ending of the world for 2012...and the primary reason for that is probably because of the mayan calendar. People notice that it ends in 2012 and try to figure out how it will end or they want to make people believe their theory of how it will end, so they include the year 2012 in their prediction.

I don't expect anything huge to happen on the exact date, but I wouldn't be surprised if something big happened soon, just looking at the way things in the world have been progressing in recent history (and in world history) it doesn't seem like a stretch to say that the world, as we know it, could end soon (or atleast take a very big turn)

So if these two happen at the same time...it looks like it could be pretty disastrous. And seeing how we are overdue for a magnetic field reversal and scientists saying there might be an increase in sun spot activity could be something. And for it to all fall in the same time period as the Mayan prediction is a pretty big coincidence. Not saying I believe in it, but its something to think about.

As far as doomsday prophecies go, I tend to believe the Mayan prediction over the others (Bible, Nostradamus, etc.) just because it's based upon scientific reasoning derived from astronomy as opposed to religious speculation. I believe 2012 is considered the 'new age' as the Earth realigns itself with the stars, which only occurs every 25,000 years. This has to be a significant event of some sort, so I wouldn't doubt any strange occurrences during that year. I'm usually not a fan of doomsday predictions, but for the Mayans to achieve their technological/astrological feats during ancient times certainly brings more legitimacy to their claims than the Bible's revelations and the whole 7 trumpets tale...

The history channel had an interesting documentary of the Mayan predictions, it was called Decoding the Past: Mayan Doomsday Prophecy. If anyone could find a streaming link to that, please post it!

EDIT - Nvm, find the streaming video here: Free Movies & Documentaries - Decoding the Past: Mayan Doomsday Prophecy

Ok well since no one knows for sure what the mayans actually mean when they said the year 2012 somethings going to happen. Why does everyone make it negative? To make money and sell books and such. According to the mayans the first time was earth right? Then mankind then dude love LoL jk!

But seriously the first 2 events where good things right? So why would the next be a disaster? The only thing i can see happening soon might be a world war or something of that nature. I doubt the middle east and those other countries America is trying to "control" will ever be how they want them to be. There will never be "peace" in the middle east. Or peace on earth. This might sound bad, but peace on earth would not work. Can you imagine how boring it would be if there was no competition? Im not saying war is a competition at all, but if everyone was perfect/peaceful there really wouldnt be anything to live for. Everyday would be the same perfect routine. No out of the ordinary would occur. As far as the war, i just dont like think everyone likes how the US does things. Its not a secret. **** theres people that live here that dont like how we do things. So i think there will be a war. Most likely over oil or something like that.

I think as far as an astroid hitting us, its just the Cube. The glaciers are melting because Megatron is trying to escape LoL! I think if an astriod was headed towards the earth they'd be able to take it out in space. Worse thing would be some debre from it. But hey who i am to know these things? Maybe everyone is right and 2012 will be our judgment day.

All the predictions that came true, dont they ever make you wonder maybe some stuff is planned? And the people prediciting are in on it? How could someone just predict the trade center going down? Few years later boom its gone? And we all kinda know 911 was staged.. planned.. I believe there is a group of people that do run the world. I think it started wayy be back during the mayans and whoever else. They formed a secret organization that in a sense controlled everything to keep it from getting out of control. Ive already typed to much sorry hahah.. Last thought, everyone play some Metal Gear itll get your mind thinking!!

Actually, the Mayans do have a prediction for after 2012... But like all of their predictions, within a specific age or throughout their calendar, the description is left to interpretation. Don't quote me on this, but from memory it went something like this...

"The world will be turned upside down... Half of man will die and half of man will fight for survival."

Something like that... Watch the vid RizzuH posted as that is where I believe I heard this (watched it some time ago, so I doubt I am dead on).

For those whom this discussion bothers... Just go about your life and don't read this thread if doomsday predictions scare ya! =P

edit, the whole polar shifting would be due to the fact our solar system is supposed to cross through the middle of our galaxy in 2012. The magnetic force within the center is enough to polar-shift our earth.

I don't adhere to all the religious nuts, but I do believe in science.. but I think something will happen, whether its the end of mankind or not, we'll see
Interesting theory I also believe in science as I have yet to see definate evidence to believe in most organized religions.

But I'm no astro-physicist/cosmologist or whatever they're called so who knows.
I don't know if you noticed it but the past few years the weather has been changing for the worse more, stronger hurricanes, flooding, a tsunami due to undersea earthquakes, I'm not saying that they are the warning signs but if you stop and think about.... they just might be. I am no scientist though, all I can really say is just know that your mere existance comes with no garauntee, and you should be alright.
