I was at the event and can tell you it was very different in person. I am home from vacation and I went to the race and sadly watched it unfold in front of me. It is one thing to watch it on a video, but in person is a whole new story. I am a huge fan of the NHRA races and go to a few each year and watch them on tv when they are on. I will not miss a single race of the 24 that are run.

The irony is that Scott's previous time trial, the chutes came out right after he hit the gas. Not this time around. By the looks if it, he was unconscious from the initial explosion as the fire bottles never came on to put the fire out. The drivewrs has to turn them on. In addition the car never event slowed down. Why was he not on the brakes? These cars can stop without chutes as it happens all the time. In fact that day Antron Browns 320+ mph Top Fuel dragster had a chute failure and he got it stopped before the sand pits. I think Scott was out from the first explosion and then there is nothing that could be done. I remember seeing the body come off and then saw the final and big explosion at the end of the track where he hit the pole and it sent the car airborne.

It was at least an hour that went by before we heard that racing will not happen for another hour or so. So we went into the pits and tried to see what was up. The look on Kenny Bernstein's face and seeing Jerry Toliver crying and all the other crew members from the various teams on their phones kinda hinted the bad news. The pit area for that car was roped off. I also know that E town has a short shutdown section compared to the new built tracks. I don't know how they will address this being there is nothing there to extend the track except a public road. Plus the fact that it may not have been a track problem. If the driver is out, having an extra mile may not even help. I think a lot of the right things that could cause this tragedy occurred perfectly.

Here is a video that is still up

Here is a picture I took from another race in 2006 at my hometown track of Scott's car. Yes this is creepy as the guy he is lined up next to is the Late Eric Medlin who was killed last year in his Funny Car while Testing.

RIP Scott, I enjoyed watching you race and talking with you.
