Default [off topic] Legacy slipping on hill?

I have a friend with a legacy with 120K miles. I dont know the year, but its probably 7 years old or so. She did an experiment the other day where she parked on a hill, pulled the ebrake up, left it in 1st gear (engine off) and the car held. She then took off the ebrake and the car slid back smoothly as if it were not engaged in gear at all.

In any car I've owned, the car will not slide back like this because of the engine compression by nature of it being engaged in first gear.

1. Is there something different about the Subaru that allows it to slip like this?
2. Is her car just old and has just lost compression?
3. Could it be the clutch slipping?!

Thanks for any replies as to whats going on. The dealer said it was normal and to just keep the ebrake on (obviously!).

[ Moved to OffTopic. Next time you should lie and say "my friend has an STi with 120K miles... ]

If it's the clutch you will be able to make it slip while underway. Try lugging the engine up a hill in 3rd gear; if there is clutch slip the RPM's will go up but the speed will not.

If it's not the clutch then you're right, it's probably the engine losing compression. Again it may only be an engine-off issue and the car could be fine when there are normal combustion pressures in the chambers. A compression check will tell this tale.

So in the end the dealer might have given you the best advice.
