Default Ok, DSM. Good? bad? Horrible?

Alright well at my school all the racers that dont have alot of money go out and buy eagle Talon's TSi turbo'd and say its the fastest car and stuff. Or they buy Eclipse's turbo'd..One dude i know had 2 Eclipse's and on his talon now. Frist one got crack walk, second got totalled, and this 3rd one i guess is completely fast. I was told by alot of people DSM are the ****tiest motors you can get. BUT everytime i tell the DSM owners that the engines are **** they say they are bulletproof and amazing.

Seriously...are DSM really that reliable or crappy motors when you start modding them no matter what you do to the engine?

cheap
fast
reliable

pick any 2.

i know a bunch of dsm fans, they are not reliable at all. they make alot of power, really easily, really cheaply. but they break alot.

i put dsm's in the same category as hondas, fast and cheap. Reliablity...not so much.

Great straight line cars they are

Im sure every car is different, but I have heard the same that they have problems.

Remember my buddy in my vids with the talon tsi? Well he ran a c6 Z06 tonight

Well long story short after alot of fighting with the car, stage2 shep racing tranny, 1000cc injectors, duel walbro 255 fuel pumps, buschar stage 3 block, enormous front mount, welded diff's, stand alone (i think dsm link), and the power maker a FP GT3575 (4 inch intake pipe, lol).

GT37: T67 compressor side (75lb wheel) and a gt35r hotside.

Well he ran across a C6 Z06. They slowed to about 40 on the freeway, i was shocked the Z06 was even agreeing to run, considering i doubt he knows that talons can be made quite quick. Did a pull from 2nd gear until the end of 4th. My buddy Rob, was on 22lbs straight pump with a pretty decent street tune. After those 3 gears he pulled about a full car on the z06 !! the z06's front bumper to Rob's rear. I guess the extra weight savings helped out the talon (2700lbs). We have yet to do any runs with 110 octane. 35lbs on this turbo is going to be completly sick. Deep into the 10's. It just blows me away that he's about 11k invested into the project and thats with the price of the car and the 284 asprin's from the amount of head ake's to get this to run with out any problems, lol.
Since the diffs are welded he drops the drive shaft for daily driving becuase the things grabs like a 4WD truck. Alot of work, but alot of money saved and one hell of a fast AWD 4 cylinder.
Now about your friends. Of course they are going to tell you that their car's engine is bulletproof. No one wants to admit when they have something that is crap. But who are you to tell them this either? If someone comes up to you and is telling you about their car and you tell them that is crap, that doesnt put you in a very good light. Even when you know for a fact that they drive a bucket of spare parts, you shouldn't tell them that. For example the kid that came up to me last year and told me he is going to put 6 turbos and 2 super chargers on his civic, I just nodded along and didnt give him crap for it. What is the point of making someone feel bad for what they drive? Anyway, this is just my opinion.

You can make any car fast if you put money into it. Some just require less money. Eagle talon TSi AWD is a decent car however it is at least 10 years old and looks it and is worth $8K tops. It, like other DSM, eclipses, etc has seen its time come and go. Yes they can be made fast for cheap, but who cares?

My buddy rob built a 600whp talon for about $12k out the door, including the price of the car. The problem is it spends just as much time on jacks as it does running. Basically it works 60% of the time, every time, lol.

I had my own DSM experience with a 91 Galant VR4. Bought a low miles (36k) example used in Phoenix, drove it home to seattle. About a year later the timing belt went and took the engine with it so it got a new engine at 50K. I sold it and got my first Subaru (2000 RS)

I miss the sleeper aspect of it but dont miss the constant wondering what was going to go next and would I be able to get a flatbed at that time of the night. If there ever was a brand of cars that needed AAA it was DSM.

i had a 91 talon n/a. went through a timing belt, transmission, and engine while i had it. i didn't mod it at all. it spend more time broken down then it did driving. however everytime i got it fix i'd go on a long trip and it was fine till i got back.

with dsm you have to remember, its not about who wins the race its about making it back to the parking lot

First, don't fall into the group of "racers" at your school. For one, they are ricers, and I guarantee you that they will never amount to anything. Besides they will probably end up wrapped around a tree.

That being said...personally, I can't stand DSM's. I would never own one.
If you want a reliable car, don't get one.

Fun if you like to tinker on the cheap. Don't count on it for anything important like a date or food. If you can get one thats not all clapped out and can get a block properly machined and with the right parts to prevent crankwalk they can be fun and pretty quick and usually run most of the time on occasion.

funny you said that...a friend of mine who has a shop specializing in japanese makes wont deal with DSM's any more; He got fed up with fixing stuff that ricers had screwed up or mods gone horribly wrong and having to deal with whiny teenagers.
