Default Re: 335xi Coupe vs. My Old STi Comparo

I definitely agree with any BMW being nicer in almost every way as far as a luxury oriented features go when compared to any japanese car priced below 35k. I have owned 2 beemers( 2000 323ci and an 05 E46 M3) and I considered modding the M3 when I had it but it came down to a money thing. I had several friends with heavily modded ones and for what you would spend on any BMW to modify, you can own an Evo and an STI, they are NOT cheap to mod much less fix. so I think the first thing you need to post when comparing a 335xi to an STI is what you pay initially for the car and ultimately for the mods. I think the BMW is a better purchase if luxury and image is your first priority... and on the street they are probably the same since you are limited to pushing your car to its full potential or risk either wreckin or being locked up the cops. if you throw down the same amount of money to mod an 08 STI as your 335... I think there were not be a comparison performance wise. My bottom line on this topic is... if you want a nice ride and an image with good performance and money is no issue.. buy a BMW.. but dollar for dollar in performance its no comparison. I assume you payed mid to high 40s for your 335. thats a minimum 10k difference to an 08 STI at 35k. I definitely agree though that BMW does have probably the best and probably only true bumper to bumper warranty. That is worth the extra money and piece of mind, again, thats IF you don't plan on modding your car other than cosmetically.

The fuel pump should be easy, after market unit.

I heard about the overheating problems. Your car should have came with the oil cooler BMW started putting in them. If not, Dinan offers their and highly recommends it for the reflash.

I heard people had some issues with the PROCEED but that may be due to the overheating and has nothing to do with Vishnu's reflash.

In anycase, if Dinan offers the reflash and I know its out, I would shell out the extra money just to know you're still covered.

Yea the leather on any BMWs is really nice. Don't get me wrong... I like Beemers.. but if I ever drop more than 50k on a car again, it will be a used 911 turbo and strickly be a weekend car. I have a friend that had an 02 996 Turbo heavily modded. The 911 is truely an insane machine...

Yuppie girls can't tell the difference. They just know it's a BMW. But posers wouldn't bother with a 335xi. Those numbers are for the enthusiats to see.

The whole car is nice.

I went for a test drive in a 335i sedan a few weeks ago, and I got to say I was impressed. For a daily driver, it had a very good suspension setup. Smooth for the commute, and tight in the corners. BMW dialed it in pretty well IMO.

The only things I didn't really care for -- the paint (every BMW on the lot had really bad orange peel), the price (46K ), and for some reason the top of the dash is hard plastic with a very strong texture, and it looks really out of place compared to the nicer bits directly below it.

I also got to sit in a 135i, but we didn't actually take it out for a spin. I like the interior better in the 135i than the 335i . More consistent in the 135i.

I'd take either one, though . Very nice cars .

I love it. I can't wait for the reflash of the fuel map to see what it does in 0-60, 1/4 mile.

No I live in the woods. Those are all leaf buds. Once the trees start sprouting my driveway is covered in these little squishy plant bits. They go away in about a month though. I just did not have time to vacuum the floor before I took the pictures.

I did pay mid 40's after some haggling, with taxes it came to high 40s. As I said in one of my first posts the price jump from the comparably equipped 08 was about $7,500. Thats a lot of money, no question. But considering that the first mod that I needed to do to the car was drop $5K to upgrade to an acceptable stereo, the price difference would really be about $2.5K. At that price difference all the extras I got with the BMW made it a better bargain. But thats only true if you, like me, hate the stock STi stereos and need good sound quality. If what I was looking for was a track car, I would look for a clean bodied, but high miled evo or sti, and then go about replacing the entire drive train and suspension with racing bits. I could probably do it for only slightly more then I paid for the BMW new. However, I am not a track whore, this is my car for street driving; for that, the BMW made a lot more sense.

There are two small world's on Nassau street now, heh.. i was in LA for college, looks like we nearly switched locations

Nice car OP, didn't realize the 335's were so underrated. Does the xi put down as much power as the 335i though?

xi's make the same power crank, but a little less on the dyno as the awd dynos read lower by and large and there is a little more drivetrain loss. The benefit though is it can really put down the power, unlike the 335i or 135i. So they tend to be a little quicker to 60.
