Default Thinking about buying a bike - Edit: Bought a bike

Looking at the 2008 GSX-R 1000. It's my first bike and I'm a little worried it might be a little too much bike for me. On the other hand I don't want to buy a 600cc bike only to decide it's too slow and take a big loss when I trade it in for something better. Any opinions?

its too much bike for you. buy something super cheap and old that you wont care if you crash to learn on, then get something faster later on.

I am in the same boat hitman. I am seriously looking at a bike and really want the 1000 but I am afraid its too much bike for the beginning rider. I am quite sure that when I pull the trigger I will get the 600rr

I purchased my first bike almost two years ago.

The first thing that I can recommend to you is to take your motorcycle safety course. Also please note that 600cc, 750cc, and 1000cc sport bikes are not beginner bikes, they are advanced bikes. Go to any of the motorcycles forums and see what they have to say about beginners on sport bikes.

Sure there are some people who start on a 600cc or 1000cc sports bikes and most of them crash or get rid of the bikes as they cant handle it. I am not sure how you think a 600 would be slow as most of the new ones run in the high 10's in the 1/4 mile.

Start on a used old sport bike or sport tourer and once you have some time in, then upgrade to a 600cc sport bike.

gsxr 1000 is way to much as a first bike, if you get one you'll most likely crash it, get a 600, they're plenty of bike for an experienced rider let alone a new guy

i have a buddy that rides a cbr1000rr on the street and tracks a 600rr

+1

Definately take the MSF. Also check here: there's alot of info for new riders: Sportbikes.net - Powered by vBulletin

Buying a Liter bike as your 1st bike WILL NOT be pretty. There's a very high probability that you'll wreck or even kill yourself. 600+cc sport bikes are very unforgiving when it comes to mistakes. Firstly, they're FAST and their throttles are extremely sensitive, which is bad combination for a beginner. Give the bike too much gas during a turn and the rear tire brakes traction and you're unable to recover, you're going to be in some serious pain/trouble. The brakes on these supersports are also the same way, very sensitive. In an emergency situation that requires sudden braking, an unexperienced rider is not familar with how to properly apply front and rear braking without locking either brake up (particularly the front brake). This will usually lead to out-of-control skiding or you flying over the handlebars.

Most people will tell you to buy a used 250cc or 500cc bike. Ride it for a year and then pick up a 600cc bike. That way you actually learn to ride the bike and if you mess up, its not a big deal. These bikes are more forgiving and if something does happen, there's a greater chance you won't end up hurting or killing yourself. Now I'm not saying you can't learn on supersport, because you can. It's just ALOT harder and considerably more dangerous. You're already putting your life in your hands by getting on a bike, why complicate things even further.

damn, i started with a honda rebel (250cc)!! I'm glad i did because i dropped it 3-4 times.

I then got a cbr 600, and personally i don't know how anyone can get tired of a 600 especially newer ones. They are incredibly fast and handle well (some would say better than the 1000cc).

I wouldn't start with a L bike, i'd start with something you won't mind dropping a few times

Good Luck

There's more to riding than straight line acceleration.

personally i started on a 97 CBR600f3, rode it for a year and then stepped up to a TL1000R v-twin, the TL was an awesome bike and i wish i never would have sold it

lately i've been thinking supermoto, something like a 400-450, good gas mileage, a blast in the curves, cheap insurence, and low price, idk if i'll get one or not since i just got a 4wheeler but with these gas prices i cant help but think about it all the time
